After years of using s 19" screen im going to treat myself too a 24" screen however, I am a bit confused by aspect ratios. I use my pc mostly for gaming and work, not movies. Which is better for my needs, a 1920×1080 or 1920×1200 screen?
Any help or advice would be of great help. Thanks in advance.

With regard to money im looking to spend about £250 pounds although I could stretch if the screen was perfect. What I really want to know is, which resolution if better for gaming, especially since i play quite a lot of older games.
Since 16:9 monitors have about 11% less pixels than 16:10 monitors, you can expect maybe a 8% - 10% increase in gaming performance generally speaking.
Depending on how "old" you are talking about some games may be able to be played on a 16:9 monitor. For example, Far Cry came out back in 2003 I think, but I was able to play it at 1920 x 1080 on my Asus VK246H monitor. Games like Diablo 2 will stretch to fill the entire screen unless you play it in a window or if the monitor allows to to set the Aspect Ratio (which tries to fill the entire screen without stretching the graphics; black bars on left and right).
