Old presario 1200 laptop is asking for a password for windows 2000

i have an old presario laptop... when i power it up it goes to open windows 2000 and asks for a password.... i have new cd to put in to update but i cant get it do anything but ask for password!! i thought maybe there was a way to just completly start it over so i can install new windows?? i cant get the desktop to show up or anything!

You should be able to overwrite an existing installation simply by inserting a Windows Install CD and changing the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD drive is first.

Like fihart says, but first try if just hitting the enter or escape key when asked for the password, helps.
