Looking for a good backup/synchronization/mirroring packag..

Can anybody recommend a good software package for automatically backing up
a laptop to a workgroup server ?

I need to keep all my files on my Dell C640 (XP) for mobility. But given
the risk of it being lost/damaged/stolen while I'm travelling, I need a
good backup. I currently do periodic GHOSTs but that's a hassle, I'm look
for something a little more seamless.

I also have a PowerEdge 1400SC that I can use as a file server under
Win2003. I know that ONE solution would be to set up the 1400SC as a domain
controller and create a roaming profile for the laptop, but this sounds
like it's more administration than I want to get into. It also means I'd
have to put ALL my machines on the domain to access the 1400.

I've seen reviews of Norton GoBack, but is this really what I want ? It
sounds like it CAN do this, but is more for version control. All I want is
simply to mirror all my current files to an external device, I don't really
care about rolling back to previous versions.

Any recomendations ?

Fred,

No need to get complicated with domain controllers etc, although I would do
it, however, I would use the 1400sc as a file server and create a root
folder that would be the home for all my data files. Share that folder out
and use the laptop to connect to it. Now assuming you are using XP pro on
the laptop because I don't think this works on home, right click on the
network connection and select "Make Available Offline". This will create a
local cashed version of all the server files on you laptop. Now when you
are not connected to the server the laptop still thinks so and uses the
cashed version of the file. The next time you connect to the server XP will
automatically sync any changed files back to the server and visa versa.

You may have to bring up My Computer, select Tools/Folder Options and the on
the Offline Files tab enable Offline Files.

Check out Directory Synchronizer from http://ajcsoft.com/index.php ,
while it doesn't do a recovevrable Ghost-like image, it will keep
files and trees in sync.

take a look at xxcopy.com
a simply "freeware" utility to very quickly "clone" a large volume of
data to another location. nicely skips open files instead of stopping.
i have this set to go off each night to copy to different folders for my
backups and also click a procedure to mirror my server down to my laptop
when i want before i leave with it. it just takes a minute to
synchronize - very fast!


i 've been using this for over 4 years and its great.
i've tried offline files using microsoft sync, and as a developer,
there's been some quirks and i find that if i didnt sync each time i
turn the laptop on and off, and before suspending and coming back,
some files on the main server would be inadvertently overwritten on the
server. it got to the point that i would back up the data that i last
changed before i synced to be sure that i didnt lose anything , to me,
the product needs more refinement, like tell me what is going to be
replaced before it does it, or only replicate one way that i specify.

the syncback product looks interesting, the first i heard about it, i
will check it out as well.

How do you use it? Is it just for data files, or can
it do a full system backup too?

I just use it for data backups. That's all it does. It also synchronizes,
which is handy so I can keep my desktop and laptop in sync.
