I'm looking for a second power supply for my Inspiron 2200. Dell's
website indicates that it will take 2 weeks to get to me. Can someone
recommend another option?

Thanks.

The website could be a little bit on the conservative side.
Mine came in half the time Dell quoted.

My first choice would be ebay, but some ebay sellers can take two weeks to
process and ship an order -- it's a roll of the dice. What we have done in
desperate situations (like arrive in strange city and discover adapter
forgotten the night before the presentation to the client) is buy the iGo
Juice universal laptop adapter at Radio Shack. It's about $100, but if you
need an adapter really really bad, it works.

Does it actually charge modern Dell laptops? They are getting a lot
more conservative about which power adapters they will allow to charge
the battery, and can detect Non-Dell supplies...

I actually had an iGo adapter, but had to return in. They don't
officially support the Inspiron 2200, but I had thought that as long
as the adapter was the right size, the voltage right, and as long as
it provided enough power, it would work. But it was flaky. Sometimes
it would work for hours on end, sometimes not at all.

I still don't know if there's something about the Inspiron 2200 that
is incompatible with the iGo or if I just had a bad unit.

How? What sort of circuitry can differentiate what I would have
thought would just be 19.5 DC volts?

Just curious.

There's a third connection in the power plug. Besides the usual
center pin and outer barrel, there's a connection on the inside of the
barrel that allows the laptop and power supply to communicate. Dell
laptops will come up with messages like "That's a 65W supply, and I
really want a 90W supply, so charge times may be adversely effected"
or "That's not a Dell supply, so while the computer will operate, the
battery will not charge".

Experience and hindsight go hand-in-hand. I've always
ordered 2 power supplies and extra batteries for my
Inspirons. What I would really like to know is who makes
an external battery charger for the Inspiron batteries?

If you find an external charger, please let me know. (The way laptop
prices are dropping, and with the price of batteries, we're almost at
the point where a used laptop could serve as a charger...!)

As a follow up, I called Dell (I didn't have the patience to set up an
account on their web site) and ordered a power supply yesterday. It
shipped today.
