Ok guys, can't remember for sure here, building my new gaming rig, running an A8V Deluxe board, with a 939 (obvisuly) 3800 dual core. Now I have 2x1024 chips, that obvisuly will run in dual channel. I have left over 2x512 chips that are identical (same speed and manufacturer as the 1 gigs)l, can I run 1.5 gig in both banks (a one gig chip, and a 512 chip), and still have the dual channel operate, or do all 4 have to be the same size?

You want the same size modules in the same channel or you'll lose dual channel mode on your RAM.

What are you doing that requires 3GB?!

I don't need 3 GB at all, it was just left over so I figured I would throw the extra gig in there for the heck of it. Done some testing and absolutley nothing even uses the first 2 gig, so the 2x512 chips are going in the linux box (which only has 256 right now).

Would having the 2x1gigs in channel 1 & the 2x512s in channel 2 work ???

Trust me I know what I'm doing... ooops, grab the cat...

It should work and give dual channel.

5oh: Sounds like a great option for the extra RAM.

It should work, but remember the problem Athlons have with 4 full banks of RAM - 333Mhz and 2T - even though you can usually change the former to 400Mhz, the command rate is more important.
This may be a moot point since using modules with 64MB per chip would probably also require running at 2T (1GB sticks have those chips). I was pissed to find that one out. Even though I've never heard AMD say its mem controller had a problem with 2*1GB, I still get about 2 errors per memtest86 run at random addresses.

These guys are getting mixed up. You have a 1gig and a 512 in channel 1, then a 1 gig and a 512 in channel 2.

The 1 gigs are paired across channels 1 and 2 for dual channel (2-channels parallel).

Then the 512's are paired across channels 1 and 2 for dual channel (2-channels parallel).

Each channel has 1.5GB. Two 1.5GB channels are matched for 3GB in dual channel.

It gets even more confusing with the way boards are wired, some have them arranged as channels 1-2-1-2, others as channels 1-1-2-2.

Basically take your gig sticks and set them up as dual channel. When you boot and the POST says you're in dual channel mode, you'll know you've got it. Then pop the two 512's into the two empty slots.
