I've had a Lexmark P4350 for at least I think the last two and a half years and still going strong.

I put that down to the heads on the cartridges.

But Im annoyed at keep buying these tri-colour cartridges that last a few sheets and then I need another. So wasteful. Upto £50 for the XL versions (34, 35).

So Im thinking about buying a new printer.

Requirements. I would say should be as good as if not better than the P4350. Needs a scanner. Needs a good price. I would ideally like to print to CD/DVD.

What will I use it for? Mainly text. Some graphics/web page print outs. A few photographs here and there.

I put together a shortlist.

Kodak EPL5
Epson SX400
Epson PX700W - Includes CD/DVD Printing and Scanning
Lexmark X4650
Lexmark X4975ve
HP PhotoSmart C5380 - Includes Scanner and DVD Printing
HP PhotoSmart C6380 - Includes Scanner and Networking and Duplex, but no DVD Printing
Canon PIXMA iP4600
Canon Pixma MP630

Epson inks always sounds nice, but concerned about the longevity. Kodak are pretty noisy I've heard, and amazon reviews show them as notoriously unreliable.

Lexmark would put me back in the comfort zone of familiarity, but again, tri-colour cartidges. The ip4600 I understand is only a printer. Meanwhile the HP's have also shifted to a separate print head.

So, my final short list looks something like:

Epson PX700W - Includes CD/DVD Printing and Scanning
HP PhotoSmart C5380 - Includes Scanner and DVD Printing
HP PhotoSmart C6380 - Includes Scanner and Networking and Duplex, but no DVD Printing
Canon Pixma MP630

Not sure if Im making a mistake TBH with the Lexmarks.

The Epson PX700W at around £150 is possibly stretching my budget. The Canon Pixma MP630 looks like a great all-rounder. Probably still a little pricey at around £100 to £130, but not outside the realms of necessity. Reviews I've seen look quite favourable, but apparently a little slow and cumbersome, overexposed scans and poor lasting inks.

The HP PhotoSmart sounds like a safe bet, probably go with the C5380 for the CD/DVD Printing, but some of the scanning/printing tests I've seen look horrendous. The scanner is rumoured to be underexposed, the stupid LCD screen seems tiny, and the lid isn't flexible enough to contain a somewhat bulky item.

This really does seem like a tie between the C5380 and MP630.

I'd probably go with the C5380 on price alone, but want convincing that the MP630 is better or whether I should go with the Epson. I'll consider any of the above four.

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Simon
