Do not know if my GW is feeling it’s age or if there is a software problem.
Running WIN98 SE and cannot create a new folder on drive – get error message
and request to debug brings up DrWatson and about 10 error messages. Also
cannot run check disk to fix errors. Otherwise everything works well and I
can create a new directory by copying and renaming. Worried that hard drive
may be failing or virus got in although Norton is in effect. While I’m at
it I have a copy of XP but did not put it in last year because of bother
with software (Acrobat Writer) and supposed need to remove and put back
modem but may do this if I have to redo OS. Any suggestions appreciated.

I've had that problem on my WIn 98 computer for a long time, never have
figured it out. I can't create a new folder in Windows Explorer, it
crashes, but I can create them in an Open or Save dialogue, so I just do
that.

DrWatson said files altered by KB891771.exe which appears to be a MS upgrade
giving others problem.
I can delete it but how do I correct?

It's possible that KB891771 could be the problem since it deals with
Curser and Icon Format Handling Vulnerabilities. In other words, the
way I am looking at it, the "Icon Format Handling" part of it may be
causing trouble in letting the icon for a new folder be created thus
the new folder does not get created.

Suggestion..... Just uninstall that hotfix, reboot and see if you can
create a folder or not. If so, then KB891771 was the problem and if
not, then KB891771 is not the problem and just let MSUpdate install it
again.

BTW, there were issues with KB891771 (imagine that, issues with
something slopped together by M$), but I don't believe any of the
issues had anything to do with not being able to create a folder.

Regards,
Ed

How long is a long time? Also can you scan disk? The KB891711 patch I
mentioned was put on in April but problem just started last week. My
biggest concern is hardware problem. Software, I might be able to ignore.
Son says buy a new computer but this one has been rock solid for ~6 years.

A year or two, I don't use it much anymore as I now use my laptop most of
the time. Scandisk works fine, have you tried it in safe mode?

Thanks, Joan and Ed. Problem persists after trying these things. Had tried
safe mode and removed suspect file.
My suspicions are that file changed other files. My GW otherwise works
fine - maybe even better since son disabled several memory hogging startup
files.

Just a generic try here, but pull out the Windows 98 cd and run SFC, see if
it replaces any changed files. It's along shot, but hey.

Thanks for suggestion. Tried it, it worked and said all OK, but directory
problem persists.

Meh, seemed to easy, but was worth a shot. Hell, did you try to just
re-install Windows over itself? That was always my last ditch effort before
I gave up and just formatted and started over totally.

Yes, but it wanted me to remove Norton antivirus and since Win98 no longer
supported, I would probablu lose upgrades.
I'm just going to let it ride since all is working well except in creating
directories and I can do that by cut/pasting/renaming.
My initial concern was hardware problem but I can live with software glitch
until this old GW dies. Thanks for all suggestions.

Frank,

Even though Windows 98 is no longer ACTIVELY supported by Micro$oft, updates are
still there on its web site. There just will never be any new updates for it
ever again... Ben Myers
