Laptop keeps shutting down during windows updates

Hello,
My laptop is pretty new and just recently, it's started shutting down suddenly when it's installing windows updates with no notice whatsoever. Both times, I've lost everything I've been working on. I'd appreciate it if someone would fill me in on why this is now happening and most importantly, what can be done to stop it from shutting off. Is it perhaps a setting that needs to be changed? Thanks.

My betting is that you have the updates set to Automatic. This means the updates will install in the background and then reboot the computer once it's done, if it needs to. Personally, I set the updates to notify me of available updates, nothing more. I pick the updates I want then it downloads and installs them and ,lastly, it prompts me to restart the computer at MY leisure.
