PC to Tv using HDMI

I have a dell PC and a LCD philips Tv. I was told that if I took a VGA spliter and placed it between my moitor and modem I could hook the other end up to an HDMI cable using a VGA to DVI adaptor and then a DVI to HDMI cable and hook it up to my TV and it would serve like a second monitor. however when I adjust the screen resolution and refreshment rate to that require by my Tv it does not respond other than the TV saying No signal and the PC working like usual. What else can I do to get it to work right?
