Try one of those throw away cams if they can stand water.

Actually I saw someone using a throw away cam in a plastic cover once. Seemed to work.

I think I saw every brand of camera in the water. Get a good digital camera period and then just be prepared to drop a lot of money for the casing. It's something like $200 just for the waterproof casing. I saw a guy flood his too which sucked but when the camera dried out it worked (except the flash).

Thanks.

But I have yet to find a casing for my Kodak camera. So I guess that I will have to buy all new stuff! I know that there is some brand especially built for that, like sealife, but I dont know how they compare to "normal" digital camera.

I have all the winter to look around for one...

I imagine water is pretty chilly in summer too. Been years since I was last diving.

Forget ice! I'm going to take the cold water training right away since I have very little body fat and actually got cold in some of the currents around Thailand. Granted I had a spring suit and rash guard on but even in Southern California I hear I need a 7mm so I think that's pretty darn cold.

Last summer, in july, water at 37 feets was around 60 degree. I was a bit congested, so I got problems with my ears and didnt go deeper...When I was moving, it wasent cold, with my 7mm suit, but when whe stop with the group of around 8 divers, to check a fish underneath a catamarn wreck or simply waiting for other student to perform exercice, I could feel the cold water.

What happen is heat dissipation. Water take the heat from our body faster than we heat it. So even in hot water like Southern California, even if it doesnt feel that cold, it is still colder than your body and the longer you stay in the water, the more heat you loose. I've spent around 40 some minutes in one dive, so in order to stay comfortable, you need a good wet suit. Surface time is appreciated after a such dive...

But for extreme cold water temperature, nothing beat a dry suit. To go underneath ice, you need special equipement. You sure dont want your regulator to freeze at 60 feets...

I think my air consumption is a bit better than that. I could do an hour at about 60 feet. At 75-90 feet I'm doing 40 minutes. My shortest dive ever was 32 minutes and that was at close to 100 feet for the first part of the dive. I even got narked on that dive which was a trip.

My air consumption isn't good at all compared to those I dove with. I'm really curious how much the cold water and thicker suit will affect my air consumption though. My problem is that after 30 minutes me and my buddy would goof around and take each other's masks, fins, and regs out. So we would waste alot of air towards the end of each dive laughing and being idiots for the underwater videographer. Diving rocks though. I can't wait to try it out here.

I still had plenty of air at the end of that dive...but too bad the lesson was over. In the cold water, they recommand to add 10 feet to the real depth. Because of the particularity of the water here, we need a special licence to dive in quebec. The PADI certificate is not enough.

Thick wet suit, glove,... and fresh water affect buyancy and it is not the same as sea water. I never dove in sea water, so I can tell by how much that affect the buyancy

Diving is supposedly more expensive than Skiing. What's the best way to buy gear?

Local dives shop for service. They will tell you what is the best for your money.

Where do you plan to do a "cold dive"?
