Software requires LPT1:, but I only have USB ports

I recently purchased a netbook which only has usb ports, and no parallel (LPT1:) port. I have a software package that utilizes a parallel port hardware "dongle" in order to access the software. I purchased a 'parallel to usb' converter cable, which allowed me to connect my hardware dongle to the usb port. However, it seems that my software is looking for 'LPT1:' to communicate with the hardware dongle. How do I fake out the computer to think the usb port is LPT1:?

More about software requires lpt1 ports
  1. i dont' have a solution, but it appears the usb2parallel cable adds itself as "USB printing support" rather than LPT1 comm port.
