So, I'm taking a class here at St. Olaf College called "Sociology of the Internet" and the main project is to spend 30 hrs in the month of Jan. in an online community, such as this one... I have to write a mini-ethnogrophy about that experience, and since we are allowed to look at communities we are already apart of, I was wondering if anyone here had objections to me looking at the Other forum and the CPU section (I figure it's a good contrast ). If you have objections to this, just PM me about it, and I will, at your discretion, change your pseudonym from the THGC if I use any quotations from you or I will not use any quotations or threads of yours at all.
This will be opt-out, which means that if I don't hear from you, I will use threads and quotations from you... though I still will probably PM you for explicit consent, just cause that's the kind of guy I am.

Some day, THG-willing, I shall obtain the coveted "Old Hand" title.
So you are hoping to develop scientific descriptions of the "CPU" and "Other" forums? Wouldn't it be better to join a gardening forum and compare that to the CPU forum? It would be a much easier contrast. Just an idea.
What is your major?
The solution may be obvious, but I can't see it for the smoke coming off my processor.

I don't know. That Other forum can get pretty wacky. Where as the CPU section is generally informal helpdesk and opinion requests.

That's nice. And what do you suggest for people who have disabled their PMs? Or am I the only one here who's done that?
Personally, I'm not worried though. Quote away. Just please post a link to the final product so that we can read it too.

i was curious about the 'Other' forum after reading your post coz i had never looked at it before. You could say i was surprised by its content.I didn't know that there was a forum on THGC for necrophiliac love stories. What a gloriously diverse community this is!We should all be very proud.
no matter how hard you try, you can't polish a turd. :]
Yeah, my idea is that, a) that should be narrow enough to keep the paper within a manageable length, and b) that there is enough people who post in both sections that I can get an idea about how different the tone of those posts can be... such as myself, Eden, PooBaa, and others.
I am a Psychology major at St. Olaf College, in my third year. This is a Sociology/Anthropology class that I am taking for fun (and credit, of course), and it's my only class in the month of Jan (yay to Interim/J-Term). I need to spend 30hrs in an online community (MUDs, newsgroups, chatrooms, etc.) and I figured that spending it here would be good, especially when you look at the differences between the Other forum and the CPU forum.
And the ethnography is really just a subjective look at some kind of society, which really means that the only science that is going on is when I try to come up with meanings and reasons behind what is said and done.
Really, though, I just want to have fun with this. It should be easy. And like I said, I'll probably PM people who have comments and quotations that I feel will add to my project.
I'll try to post the finished product somewhere, but I'm not sure if my campus webspace can be accessed if you are not behind the firewall. And since I don't have any other webspace, I might have to find some other creative way to spread it around.
