15" or 12" laptop?

I'm in need of a new PC. I've never owned a laptop
before

I really don't "need" a laptop per se as I'm not a
business traveler

But I want a laptop cause I "might" need to take it
with me and also cause its less clutter in my life.
I'm going to be a 47 yr old college student soon.

Having said that I've looked at 17" models and they are
just too big in my opinion.

So it seems to me its between 15" and 12" display
laptops. and I'm having a devil of a time deciding.

Any advice or opinions on what YOU like and why?

GROW SOME BALLS AND MAKE A DECISION ON YOUR OWN!

Get all the screen you can afford. You're going to spend hours staring at
that display. Make sure it is something you can be comfortable with. I own
an Inspiron 9300 and while it is VERY heavy, that 17" widescreen is pure
heaven. But, I wouldn't want to pack it around a college campus all day,
that's for sure. I would suggest going with a 15" or 15.4" widescreen
display and trying to keep the weight at about 6 pounds or so.

I bought my college daughter a Dell 600M in October and she loves it. It
was the SXGA+ w/64MB video.

Well, as the owner of a 12" IBM Thinkpad X40 and a 17" Inspiron 9300, if I
could own only one, it would be.

The 12" Thinkpad.

It's very readable and very, very light.

The key is are you going to carry it a lot or occasionally.

If it is occasionally, go with 14" or 15". If it is regularly, then go with
an ultralight and I'd recommend the Thinkpad X40 or X41.

I'm a bit confused on the IBM line maybe you can
educate me?

What is the main diffs between the X, T, and R lines?

I went to IBMs web page and couldn't find a matrix to
let me compare them. Gets mind boggling looking at all
the lines

I do know I want PentM and Centrino tech. What lines
does that narrow it down to?

Again.... want to stay between 15" and 12" display.

Don't mind 14" display but I'm leaning towards the
smaller end of the scale (12") than the bigger (15")

I'm also looking at the Dell 700m as well

T = Big (Latitude equivalent)
X = Really Little
R = Medium to Big (Inspiron equivalent)

I think.

I really only know the X.

The 14" version of the T42/T43 series is almost identical in size to the
D610. The T-series is excellent, and you can find some amazing deals at
some colleges (I'm talking close to $1000 off IBM's list price).

Averatec has some excellent prices but I'd question the quality (I have
heard some bad things like the keyboard warping from heat, etc.).
Personally, I'd go with a well known brand (IBM, Dell, Sony, Fujitsu,
etc.); also I'd go with a minimum 3 year warranty on parts (not
necessarily on site warranty, but at least something like the basic 3
year that comes with all Latitudes).

If this going to be basically your only machine, I'd look into the 14"
model size (esp. if you plan to carry it with you semi-regularly); also
stay below 6lbs. Some particularly nice models in this size/weight
range are the Dell Inspiron 600m, Dell Latitude D610, or IBM T42/T43.
If you plan to also keep say your current desktop, then something like
the 700m might be a better option -- I just wouldn't want it as my
primary machine. I wouldn't go with any resolution larger than SXGA+
(1400x1050) because the text appears to small on screen.

The set of business travelers and the set of people who need
laptops are disjoint. These days, the marginal cost is getting
low enough that lots of people are getting laptops: they're
really very useful.

I have a 12" Latitude D400 from work and a 15.4" Widescreen Inspiron
6000 for home use. I carry the D400 around pretty much every day: it's
light enough that it's basically no bother at all. I have to be a little
more deilberate about the Inspiron, since it weighs 50-60% more. Having
said that, the 12" XGA display is too small, both physically and in
terms of resolution.

If you want specific advise:

- If you _need_ to carry your laptop around daily, you probably want a lighter
weight machine like a D400, or the IBM X series.

- If you can get away with carrying it around only a few times a week, then
you'll want the bigger display.

- I would avoid the 17" displays. On a 17" laptop, you're paying laptop
prices, getting laptop compoonents, and losing a lot of the portability
benefits those things are supposed to buy you. A better choice would be
a smaller laptop (like those you're thinking about) and an external display
to use when at home.

- If you're still astride the fence, get a D600 or IBM T series. I have
several co-workers with the D600, and it's not a bad compromise between
the two extremes, and it looks like a very nice machine.

yes at this point in time it the laptop will be my only
PC. Trying to reduce clutter in my life.

Frankly it will be setting most of the time on my desk.

Now after talking to you guys I'm leaning towards
14-15" display rather than 12" display

I would get a separate keyboard and mouse and could
lean back in chair with external keyboard only my lap
and use the 14" from that distance you think?

yep I setting on the fence. Sorry. Its a big purchase
for me and money is tight so I got to make sure
whatever laptop I buy its the right "fit" size wise

I just forked out thousands of dollars on tuition.

The 17" laptops are definitely out of the picture. If
I'm gonna go that big Id get a desktop I suppose.

Now I'm leaning towards 14-15" such as the D600 or T42
you mention above.

No! No! Don't apologize!

It took me a year to decide myself...

Both are excellent choices. The T42 is probably a nicer machine,
but the D600 is 1) less expensive and 2) available with damage
insurance in most states. Both of those things make the IBM's
harder to justify, IMO.
