Just Regular Rubbing Alcohol W/ Magic Eraser?

Hi Guys,

Gonna use the ME for the first time. A bit hesitant, but I have a
playfield that is extremely dirty and it's not comin' up with anything
else.

I know that I need to go easy with VERY light pressure, if any at all,
and just wanted to know if I should do anything prior to using the ME?

Also, have heard you guys use alcohol. Do you dilute it at all or just
dampen the ME with rubbing alcohol straight from the bottle?

I know it's been spoke of before, just wanted to ask these specific
questions.

Thanks so much Guys!

Sincerely,
Tim

I just soaked the ME with regular rubbing alcohol. I did use some
light pressure, you'll get the hang of how much pretty quickly. The
sponge gets dirty fast, but the dirt tends to stay on the sponge. I
let it dry to a haze, and then cleaned it with Novus 2; buffed with a
clean rag and then waxed and polished by hand. Goes pretty fast.
Whites and yellow will not be perfect, just a whole lot better.

I may be in the minority here but when I tried using alcohol I didn't
seem to get the "lube" that I needed. I dip in water, squeeze out
almost all of it, and then maybe add a drop or 2 on the pf and it seems
to help the ME work more smoothly. I don't think this small amt of
water will hurt the pf but you should be careful with ME on any pf you
try.

Dont know what you did.. but I've been using 70%/30% and ME with no
problems. I cut a small square, about 3" square, out of the large
brick. I *dab* it with alcohol, I do not soak it. A little dab is all
you need. I rub for a bit and wipe with a clean rag. I just did a nasty
swirl'd Flash playfield, no white residue at all.

I found 90% to not work nearly as well as 70%. The water content
really makes the magic happen from what I've found.

Every grocery store and pharmacy around here carries both 70% and 91%.
Blue bottle is usually lower proof, the opposite of with Smirnoff ;-)

I always clean the playfield as much as possible with some rags and
Naptha before going at it with the ME. I've always used 70% rubbing
alcohol, just a bit, on the ME and it's always worked great. I follow
it up with another cleaning with Naptha and polish with Novus before
applying wax. It's always worked great.

I used the ME once on a Comet playfield that had deep swirls and cracks
in the paint. No white residue problem at all.

Tim:

I use 90% alcohol. The balance is water and the less
water you get on your playfield the better. Water
will raise the grain of the wood where it is exposed.

Where do you find the 90% stuff? Every grocery store and pharmacy
around here carries the 70% variety.

Novus #2 should take up any of the cloudy residue that ME leaves behind.

I would not use alcohol, as it seems to take up more paint than water. I
have not had any good experiences using alcohol to clean painted surfaces.

Really? I have had great success using good ol' isopropyl alcohol and
the magic eraser. Haven't lost any paint or noticed any color coming up.
I've used it fairly agressively on my old Jumping Jack and newer games
like a Pool Sharks I'm working on now. Maybe you were using denatured
alcohol, Randy?

I've had the same success. My Seawitch came out incredible after the
ol' ME treatment, using straight iso alcohol. Just go slow and take
your time.

I used rubbing alcohol with a ME on my Haunted House playfield (thinking it
would be better than water since it would evaporate more rapidly), and went
right thru to wood incredibly easily. Fortunately, I have a printed Mylar
patch for that area -- it was just sort of a test.

I've also seen alcohol soften paint, but I can't think of what that scenario
was. Anyway I've avoided it ever since ;-)

Hmmm. Maybe the inks on System 80's are weak. Thats one era I haven't
tried it on. I've never seen alcohol soften paint, enamel, acrylic,
urethane or laquer. I think it would be impossible for it to do so if
the paint is cured. Now ink is another story and alcohol will certainly
breakdown most uncured inks.

Cliffy:

Ditto. In fact, it's amazing how little paint comes off.
I've tested them on playfields that are already worn to the
wood, and the ME hardly affects the edges of the wear.
Holes from chips don't get any bigger (just cleaner), and
I've found with 90% alcohol you still have to rub for a long
time to get through the topcoat.

I went through paint on my FH using the eraser with no alcohol. I believe I
had just dampened it as prescribed on the package.

It didn't take much. Before I started screwing with it all I had was the
usual ball swirl.

They work great but clearly can burn through paint in certain situations.

Perhaps the alcohol reduces the chance of losing paint? Perhaps acts as a
bit of a lubricant?
