Backup files to media from Vista Recovery Disc Command Prompt?

Forum Computer Brands : HP Backup files to media from Vista Recovery Disc Command Prompt?

I have a friend's HDD with a SMART error reporting 'imminent failure'. Vista fails to 'autorepair' it, and otherwise the OS won't boot, so I cannot access the files, of which there are NO backups...

I created a Vista Recovery CD and booted that, and opened the command prompt, from which I see the directories and all the files.

I want to be able to somehow copy these files out of the machine to external media. I know that NTBACKUP is meant for tape or whatever, and that it doesn't work with other media.

Is there anyway, in this current state, where the HDD clearly is at least partially alive, that I can recover these files?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
