TECH: Gottlieb Card Whiz credit button won't start game

I'm trying to help a friend of mine solve a problem with his machine.

It was all working perfectly fine, but now when the machine is powered
on, hitting the credit button does not do anything - absolutely nothing
happens -- no score reels turning, no score resetting, absolutely
nothing.

He says he can poke around inside and manually flip some switches and
get the machine to play, but the start button is not functional at all.

He tried the "S" relay - when he pushes the lever on the "S" relay -
the scoring wheel does a one-third revolution and that's it.

Another test: He pressed the "S" relay and then the "AX" (reset
control)relay. At this point both the TILT and GMAE OVER lights go
out, and the "1' light for the first ball is on. The score reels are
not reset though.

Also, at this point the start button still does nothing but he can play
the game. But, after playing the first ball, the machine does not
advance to the second player, and also, the ball number never advances
past "1". So, after pressing the S and then AX relays, the machine is
reset enough to play a ball, but it is not really entirely reset for a
complete game.

Another problem... it's always set to be in 2 player mode, so that is
something that also should get reset to single player, but it never
happens, it's always in 2 player mode.

Any help is appreciated.

there is your problem, he needs to look at the player counter. why is
it not resetting. also have him trigger the reset relay. get the game
to boot up and see what happens. hte credit button will not work
unless, you have credits to play with, or on free play. and if the
game does not reset all the way back home. tell hime to stop pressing
relays, just the reset relay for now. i think its your player
counter, manually reset it back to home and see what happens

If the game was working fine and all of a sudden it won't do anything
the first thing I do is completely go through the AX relay. Make sure
it is locking/unlocking properly and check each switch carefully. For
some reason the switches in that relay are really touchy about
adjustment. Most of the time that is where the problem winds up being.
