Windows XP resume from standby hangs before password prompt

Hi,

I have been having intermittent hangs on my Dell Inspiron 9100 notebook
running Windows XP Professional SP2. I have the latest driver and BIOS
updates from Dell, but have been experiencing these problems for a
number of months before the recent updates.

The scenario is that the standby seems to work ok, but when I bring it
back up it seems to initialise ok, the USB mouse is active and moves
the pointer around the screen, there is periodic hard-drive activity,
caps lock toggles the indicator, but I'm stuck on the grass-and-clouds
backdrop image. When I have a successful resume I see this image pop
up just before the login screen appears, so it seems that it get stucks
just before presenting the login screen. There is no other choice at
this point than to do a hard reset.

Anyone seen a similar problem? My web searches show many people with
video driver issues where they get a black screen which is obviously
different to my problem.
