Boot from CD on Compq Presario R3000

I need to know how to boot from an external FireWire DVD drive on my laptop so i can install my os.

I only heard of this possibly working with Macs. . .

on a Compaq-- only if the BIOS explicitly supports it. This is most likely NOT possible. USB or PCMCIA / CardBus / Express Card sure, but not IEEE 1394
