Clean install

Last response: in Windows 7
Share

Can someone please run me through a quick clean install of windows 7 and my hard drive as i believe i have some nasty root-kits.

All i need to know is where i can download windows 7 again (link would be appreciated - i have product key).

And some basic steps doing the clean wipe. Also could you take me through partitions and how to do one? I want my hard drive completely clean restoring my system.

Many thanks

With the downloaded ISO you need to burn it to either a CD disk or a USB drive, which you can do with the program freeisoburner:
http://www.freeisoburner.com/

Now back up ALL the files you may want to keep to another drive.

With that all complete, all you need to do is wipe/format your harddrive. You can do a simple format with the Windows installation disk or you can go full out and "nuke" your drive and wipe everything with DBAN:
http://www.dban.org/
If you are using DBAN, you'll need to download that and again put it on a thumb drive/ disk since it is an ISO file. If you are using DBAN, use freeisoburn to burn a copy of DBAN onto a separate flash drive than the windows copy and boot from the DBAN flashdrive/disk. Follow the instructions to wipe the hard drive and reboot the computer with the windows cd/usb drive and follow instructions to install windows

Thanks a ton, but my PC is infected with something which seems like a rootkit, will backing up files on my computer risk that rootkit is in that? I don't need to backup anything as i dont have anything important.

Thanks

Also ( sorry about all these questions aha), would the windows format remove everything so it could delete the rootkit i may have. Also what do i do about partitions or don't i need to *** with that?

Thanks

If you want to be safe and not back up anything, that's fine. It's even better since you don't need to back up files (some people have word docs or pictures that they must have). You can now do either a format or a nuke. I would personally nuke the drive to make sure everything is removed

Right. You'll need to two disks, one with DBAN burned and the other with Windows burned. Boot the computer with the DBAN disk first and follow the instuctions. I believe DBAN automatically nukes the whole drive, and erases any partitions:
http://www.dban.org/node/54
You can then boot with the Windows disk and it will automatically create a partition for you

I apologize if anything I say was already mentioned, just thought I'd try and help, covering any bases I can think of.

If you need the ISO you can obtain your specific edition of windows from here http://www.mydigitallife.info/download-windows-7-iso-of...

Make sure to match up the correct ISO with your product key.

I would not recommend backing up all your data and re-using it on your new install, as whatever is causing the problem could be hidden within a file unknown to you. At the same time, you shouldn't forfeit all your data if it's important.

My recommendation is to run some root kit and virus scanners to find out where the problem is first. Then backup data that is needed, scan this backup with another system before re-downloading your data to your new install. This way you can verify again that anything you move over isn't infected. This is assuming you don't have a safe/clean backup of your data somewhere else.

When you boot to the ISO image it will show you your drives, from the installation you can delete partition's and install a clean copy. If your really paranoid (not a bad thing), then you can use the Ultimate boot CD to boot from and then secure wipe your entire drive. There is a program that will basically write zeros and ones to the hard drive truly erasing the drive's content.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

I ran like every anti rootkit, anti malware , anti virus and anti spyware thing on this planet, with none of them finding anything at all, so i decided to clean install windows. You think this virus of some sort could survive a complete nuke of the hard drive?

Thanks

What DBAN does is it goes over all the bits and writes in 0's in place of 1's, and it does it multiple times, so it'll probably not survive
