It depends on what you need to do with the computer, as well as how much it is. If you give us your intended uses for the laptop, and an approximate budget it'll be much easier for us to help you.

This is a pretty good build except for the XP and lack of dedicated graphics. Will that matter to him? We cant tell you if its a good deal or not without the price...

However, I feel someone needs to point out-- if your brother is studying computer engineering dont you think he would rather pick out a computer himself? I know giving it to him on his birthday would be nice... but personally I would not want someone with less technical knowledge than myself buying me a computer.

Maybe you should just give him a gift card or promise to buy him one that he picks out?

If you're concerned about graphics I'd stay away from anything that says intel GMA, however without an approximate budget its hard to give specific suggestions.

Woa. if thats $2000 US you can do a lot better.

Some ideas for comparison:

You can get a Dell studio 17 with a core i7 and ati mobility 4650 for around $1400,
or a fully loaded Lenovo ideapad with Core2 Duo processor T9900. Lenovo has some powerful small laptops too if he needs it to be highly portable.

If you like Toshiba this seems like a beast at $1,349

bigger toshiba version at $1800 US

There are some good ASUS models too:

The recent rating posted on Tom's put Asus and Toshiba on top in terms of laptop reliability.
