Is my CPU Damaged?

My first computer I put together, what a doosey, anyway, when I first booted it was fine, but for some reason it would freeze sometimes.

Eventually it doesn't boot at all, saying cpu over speed, so taking the advice from Crashman he said check for temperature and voltage problems, Well I did that, and my idling temperature was 156 F, no idea what it was when I would run 3d mark...
Anyhow, I got a box fan, put it on high, and still cpu over speed, now I REALLY don't think it's a temperature problem, when I start up, I get one beep, no codes, just CPU over speed, My voltages are all idling need their marks, so could my cpu be fried, or my heatsink too small?

I'm running AMD 2700++, 512mb Samsung pc3200 ddr ram, Seagate 40gig 7200rpms, Radeon 9700 Pro, sony floppy, ASUS a7n8x Pheonix AWARDBios v6.00pc, CD-RW Liteon, Creative Labs Audigy 2, Cheiftec Case,.

I've never heard that message, and that might be something you'd want to contact the manufacturer about, but there ares some thing syou can try. Try unplugging everything but your video card and see if it gets teh error. Also you may have an option between jumperless settings and normal settings and you didn't bother to set it on jumperless or something like that. I honestly can't help you, but i'd try that and just contact the manufacturer of your motherboard.

I just helped a friend set up an A7N8X and found out that it defaulted to a 100 MHz. Front Side Bus. So I put the settings on manual and put it to 133 MHz. I then got your "CPU Overspeed" message and it wouldn't boot till I put the FSB back to 100 MHz! Very strange!

Turns out we needed to leave the "CPU frequency multiple setting" on "auto" then it would take the 133 (and more!) FSB and progress through the boot normally without the CPU overspeed message.

As for your heat problem, it sounds serious. I would definitely get a better HSF, all copper for those new Athlons!

156F? How is this possible? Did you install the heatsink with the step on the wrong side? Or did it come with a thermal pad, and you forgot to remove the plastic covering? Or did it come without a thermal pad, and you forgot to use paste?

<font color=blue>You're posting in a forum with class. It may be third class, but it's still class!</font color=blue>

What are you meaning with "bad"? Cracked? Or are you using a Duron 1000 HSF for your setup? Are you conscious that you can kill your CPU? I would invest in a new HSF right now ...

Still looking for a <b>good online retailer</b> in Spain :frown:

this is the issue i am talking about when i say "heat issue" just so you guys are aware what i'm talking about. Intel CPU's don't have this problem. So umm ya.

AMD should really pick up Intels heatsink design. The temps at 2ghz is about 39C, i up the clock to 2.3ghz and the temp is at 41. Not much of a difference.

I've seen Intel pretty hot myself.

I'm still learning & having fun doing it!! Trouble comes with the things you forget or overlook along the way that make it not so fun!!

No not at all......

Read <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=125384#125384" target="_new">This</A> Thread....

Just 2x 80mm case fans.....Volcano 7+ modded with volcano 7's fan using 7+'s 3 speed switch.....at medium speed (roughly 3800rpms) that fan is very quiet and cpu under full load wont surpass 33 degrees celcious.....thats even after 4 hours of running Seti and UD Cure for cancer... =)

Full fan speed gives me 31 degrees celcious.........under full load........but i dont liek hearing the fan....so i keep it at medium.... =)

what cpu are you running? ahh i see 1800+ at 2000+

that isn't all that bad.

I'm not gonna buy an AMD system however ... if AMD manages to get something out that is new (aka Hammer) between now and april i might consider that instead of upgrading my pentium 4. But only if nvidia produces a chipset for it.

the switch to a new design in a few months would be why. Why buy something when in 4 months you will want to upgrade again.

oh ya ya-know i was thinking, do you have the command line version of seti or the GUI version? The command line version is faster and that is what i use.
