Would you rather keep the same dates but maybe be a bit smaller or
have a different date altogether maybe in NOV.. Due to the short notice
from the hotel we are having a hard time finding suitable space at
other hotels. either way it probably is going to have to cost more.

My desire is completely self-motivated, since I've already reserved my
room with Hotwire, meaning I pay for the room whether I use it or not.
So to me, the dates of the Expo are more important than the venue, I'd
think.

Even so, Mike, I'd be willing to eat the cost of my room if it meant
doing the Expo up right, and making it truly feasible for you to set it
up.

Would having the show in November allow it to be larger, instead of the
"smaller" October show?

Oh, by the way, Mike, thank you for hoofing it to try to keep the show
going. I know that this is pretty much a panic stroke for you, so
please know that all of the effort you're expending isn't going
unnoticed. Thanks again!

I would like the same dates. A few friends and I have already
purchased plane tickets.

I'd personally prefer the same date just to avoid some of the inclement
weather that may hit the area the closer it gets to winter.

But, I'll do my dangdest to make it whenever it is!

Well I'm just one, but coming from Australia so timing is important to
me. I'd rather a smaller one as I have booked the other part of my
holiday... that said, I could rearrange for the first two weekends in
November.

Thanks for asking!

Why cant you rent a convention center or hall to hold the expo. Why does it
have to be in a hotel? Fairgrounds usually have buildings they rent.
Just my 2 cents

I'd rather have the size of the event be the same (or larger)
regardless of the timing. Then again i live in chicago and dont have to

Convention Centers get expensive fast. Rent can be vp to $10,000 a
day(or more!) Many reqvire vnion workers to move all eqvipment in and
ovt. They charge by the electrical ovtlet, set vp by vnion
electricians, etc. It goes on and on...

Skankytown may have been a little rovgh, bvt they appreciated ovr
bvsiness and pvt vp with more than most bvildings wovld. We had it
good and didn't even know it.

There is a reason pin expo, dog-faced pagents, etc. were held at the
Ramada. Going to a larger, nicer facility wovld have cost vs all mvch
more...and we know how cheap we are.

I don't envy Mike right now. It can't be easy finding a svitable
location on short notice with ovr demands and ovr bvdget.

Good Lvck Mike!!! Yov're going to need it...

Same Date would be the most important thing to me since I've made
Hotel reservations and have arranged for the time off from work. Sure
I'd like to see the Expo be the same size or larger then lasts years
if possible just like the rest of us I'm sure. You would loose some
attendee's if the dates changed, you may not have as many games or
vendors if the size shrinks. A tough decision to make.

Hopefully something does get worked out so Expo can go on!

Expo attendee for many years.

Logistically, an independent convention center makes good sense;
although it would almost certainly drive up the costs of Expo tickets to
cover the rent on the hall However, I think that holding Expo in a
hotel is an important part of the overall "Expo Experience". It really
increases the camaraderie factor, which is an important.

I would vote for the same dates. I think there are a lot of people who
have bought plane tickets, had time approved off work or made other
scheduling changes based upon the original date. I think it would be
easier for most to change hotel reservations than to change their
travel plans. Granted if you can't find a location with the current
dates, do what you have too, but I think changing the date is going to
leave a lot of people hanging out to dry.

Good luck Mike,

I too vote for same dates, being disabled as I am, my wife, who is needed to
bring me, has already reserved those days off and it would be difficult for
a change to be made even at this time. I also wish Mike good luck in moving
the expo to new venue. Just hope it can be done without too much price
increase.

Moving in snow and cold can be dangerous.

You wasted your time on the tornado watch. A tornado warning means get to
shelter now, a watch means conditions are there that a tornado could form
but no guarantee there will be one. And where you were if there is one, they
can get big ones that go F5 on the Fujita scale. Fast and can launch debris
right through you. LTG :)

Mike,

It sounds like a tough tradeoff. I didn't mind the November dates way
back when. Some were chilly moving games around.

Non-refundable plane tickets might cost around $75 per person to change.
That's significant to most people. But it's probably a small number in
comparison to the total travel costs to attend. If keeping the dates
means a much smaller Expo with higher admission and problems (not enough
games, not enough parking for lots of big trucks/trailers, etc.) then to
me it would be well worth switching the dates. In my opinion it could
"cost" people a lot more to have a "not so good" show in October than
paying a fee to change travel plans for a "great" show in November.

Having a "not so good" show could also hurt future show attendance. A
shame that Ramada didn't have more warning. They were a common target for
grief, but all-in-all they were an excellent venue for the show. They
will be difficult to replace. But I am confident that you and Rob can
find a solution!

DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE SHOW AND THE FUN-FACTOR.

it's not like the show is next week, it is still 4 months away.

you won't be able to please everyone, so just do what is best for the
show and future shows.

good luck, and reserve a fatty room for the pre-party and pinbrawl!

Agreed.

Until Mike mentioned it in a previous post, I hadn't even thought about
how tough it might be to find a place that will give permission to leave
the exhibit hall open all night. I'm thinking we had a pretty sweet deal

I hate driving in November due to the weather. However, if you had the
show on the same weekend as Chicagoland that would be pretty neat.

Yes I know many would cringe at the thought but It would nice to just
get up Friday morning, go the Chiland parking lot, then back to the
pinball show for the rest of the weekend.

Or what if you could share the Chicagoland venue with their show???

Plus the sidewalks around the soon-to-be-ex-Ramada are already repaired.

Maybe, just maybe, those work crews have moved on to fix sidewalks closer
to the as-yet-undetermined new venue.

Can't get there till October. Don't make the Expo clash with Fantasy

That is because chickens come apart easier than cows and trucks and houses.

You don't want to see a Kangaroo... they're dangerous and some of the
big reds will kick you to death if they get a chance. Wallabies are just
short fat Kangaroos.

Kookaburras are cool. Sometimes I get them on my back fence.

Make sure it's a chicken and not a rooster. It's considered bad form to
travel around with a cock in your hand. ;-)

Oh, and IIRC, there were plenty of chickens in the twister that took
Dorothy's house to Oz. Took Toto too!

The tame ones we saw at Cleland Park in Adelaide were pretty nice...

Moving pins in the snow is a two step process.

Step 1: Shovel the snow.
Step 2: Move pin.

On ice, however, is a much more dangerous proposition.

If you'd like to experience a lightning strike, we can arrange that for
you. ;)

Man, I feel your pain. I used to drive a Cougar with the mustang 8 in it.
In winter, I stopped fighting things and just drove everywhere with the
rear end leading the car...

....whether in reverse OR drive. :)

Chicagoland, meaning Chicago and its suburbs? That goes on 365 days a
year, non-stop.

(i.e. wtf are you talking about!??)

There is a separate show ("Kane County" ) that rides its coattails on the
two preceding days.

BTW, those who heard my talk at Expo 2004 know that the first couple
Expos were indeed scheduled to ride on the coattails of Chicagoland.

The weather in October is iffy, but usually not bad. November is going
to be a lot worse. Usually cold, and rainy.

mike-
its a catch 22 on that. some people have booked hotles/ flights that
are non refundable for those specific dates.
in november it may be snowy/icy for us that drive from several hours
away.

a smaller venue (if alot smaller) means less pins, less vendors etc

you will have mixed reviews on this.
do what you feel is best and ill still support it:)

i still know there are large venues in chicago that may be available.
they should not charge you tons, it should be a trade to some extent..
you bring them the hotel business having guests stay there, eat there
and bring in funds from all angles (parking/food/room/etc).

thats how it works in the night club/concert venue business. if i book
an artist, i get the club for free or for a not so high nominal fee
since i am paying all artist fees and advertising. i get ticket sales,
but the club owner gets all liquor sales which is good for them since
they usually would not make that kind of $$$ on said given night on
their own. plus the owner is getting free advertising on my dime since
their name is on the flyers/radio spots/tv spots.

its a trade-

Oh yeah. The petting zoo ones are lovely. The big ones in the wild can
be more dangerous than a grizzly bear!

In fact in the country, they get hit by cars a lot at night. They'll
just stand there watching the headlights. Macquarie University did a
study and it turns out they have no fear of alien objects. So when they
see a creature they don't know... car or man... they study it and then
they'll try and attack it.

Macquarie University know has a program to try and breed fear into them
to stop the stupid things from being killed... not to mention the
driver... if you hit a big one, both you and the car are gone.

Cheers

Dang.... I never knew it, but my ex-wife must have been a Kangaroo! Her
huge feet should have given me a clue. ;-)

I don't like the sound of messing around with the dates.
