I'm getting fed up with my PII-350 (OC'ed to 467) with 384MB of PC133 RAM; I want something more responsive, but I don't want to spend more than US$400.
It used to be the P4-1.6A that was the killer deal for people like me, but I've since lost touch. Perhaps a P4-2.53 (FSB533)? Then, what kind of RAM? What kind of DDR is favourable with this Intel chip / chipset? What kind of MOBO? Is there an AMD option that won't blow me out of my room due to loud fans?
I can go either way: AMD or Intel; have good experience with both. Also, not a heavy gambler; more the occasional number-crunch, surfing, etc. In other words, not looking to update my video card or hard-drive. Thanks!
I would first like to make a strong vote for the AMD system. And also point out that the AMD cpu needing loud fans myth is just that, A myth. AMD retail coolers are very quiet.

roughly $1 US = $1.55 CDN or so so u do the math, its definently under $400US...and it will be a SCREAMER for the price.....definently faster than a P4 1.6 @ 2.1GHz or whatever.....(that is comparing both setups which overclock extremly well which in this case the lower clocked T-Bred's DO...)
