Get an AMD definetly. This thing is sick in max. U need an entire system spec?
IMO, get this:
Some case w/ 350W psu
XP2100 or 2200 (right before the huge price jump)
512DDR
nForce 2
GF4 Ti4600 (or 4400, depends how rest of budget comes out) (reason I say GF4 is cause it can be turned to quadro and thus u can run the viewports in 3ds really well)
40 to 80GB HDD (I'd say Maxtor cause they're my fav company, never had a bad experience w/ em)
I'd reccomend a 52x CD drive and then one of em $30 w/ rebate burners from compusa.
If u want something higher than 2.1 ur gonna need a sound card (though for 2.1 the builtin nforce 2 one is great)
monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse r up to u- what I'd suggest for mouse though is the logitech dual mouseman optical. For monitor how big u wanna go? for 17" get a FE791SB, and for 19" get FE991SB-both r from NEC
If I forgot some component feel free to remind/ yell at me:)

He has 1 grand to spend on a system, no way he can afford to get then a 3.06ghz ht and he wants to opt for something inexpensive so an athlon solution would be what he's looking for.

btw, if you take off the sse2 optimization on max, results look quite different; the athlon seriously is better then.

I agree with flame. Get Athlon XP 2100+ or faster.

For CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/CD-RW, I strongly recommend LiteOn. They sell great drives at a good price

*sigh* there are other processors on that benchmark asside from the 3.06 P4.......
And why does it matter whether it uses SSE2 or not? Are you going to complain when software comes out that utilizes x86-64? It produces the same results, only fasters, so what's your point?

SSE2 patch is for max 4. Maybe he has max 3. Anyway, I do realize there are other procs there but all in all the athlons and p4's at same speed are tied ('cept for the HT one) so it don't really matter. In that case go for cheaper solution, which would be the amd one.

again, a simple visit to a website would answer the question way better than someone's word

As you see on there:
The Athlon "3000+" Barton is $632 vs the $625 3.06 P4.
The Athlon "2800+" is $406 vs the $367 2.8 P4.
The Athlon "2600+" is $271 vs the $256 2.6 P4.
The Athlon "2400+" is $169 vs the $180 2.4B P4.
The Athlon "2200+" is $110 vs the $175 2.26 P4.

As you can see, the cheaper processor varies with different grades of performance. With a $1000 system, he can most definitely afford the bottom 3 or 4 of that list.

It is indeed shocking how lazy people are. What's ironic is, it probably takes more effort to sign up to the forums and post a question like this than just to google for those sites.

It seems sometimes to make more sense to ask here, as a starting point to the research, then some of the answers to the questions.

If these forums aren't for asking those questions they why is anyone here? Let's not be mean. If people don't know and there are a group of people that give reputable answers let them ask.

As for his question, well, he could get far too many replies wtih too much variation to help if everyone just answered his question.

It like the way that you can compare only the low end why not the high end where intel sold there CPU for less and have a Intel sticker.

Just next to the lab and the bunker you will find the marketing departement.

Because he can't afford the high end with 1K. Using 3d s max almost daily, I have a lot more respect for the athlons than for the P4's. Additionally, for my purposes dealing with simulations and stuff, my athlon is worth ten p4's to me.

2.4 or 2.5 cost about 190$ and 220 $ so a systmes complete can be made with a 1000 US easy.

or he can get a xp2200+ for 110, and the performance difference between 2400 and 2200 is negligible.

At the end it will be 900$ for the athlon 1000$ for the intel.price/performance stay at the same but on the intel that a intel sticker on the box.
