COM Port 3 has become unavailable

I use Laplink 12 under Windows XP to connect two computers with a serial
cable. Laplink has been using COM 3. Now, Laplink tells me that the port is
"unavailable." Using the Laplink option to try to configure and enable the
port does not work. A portion of the "configure" dialog/setup box is
greyed-out.

My other COM ports are also unavailable. Device Manager shows only COM 1.

How can I renable a COM port, probably COM 3, so that Laplink can again use
it? I will appreciate advise.

Solution:

->Open Regedit
-> Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\xpvcom\history\group
-> ouble-Click on the entry named '6', the one with a value equal to 'COM3<-->COM27'
-> Clear the value so that you still have the entry named 6 but data is empty
-> Start Cellular Emulator

Hello I am attempting to do something similar, but cannot locate xpvcom. Is there possibly another key this entry may be stored under??

I need to install a "virtual" modem to com3 but when I attempt to add it only com1 is available to choose from.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
