Hello,
1st time poster. I just got an xps 8300 scratch and dent for $629.

I had to restore the factory settings due to an issue with loading web pages (4 hrs of trouble shooting with Dell)

When I power it on, it seems to take a long time configuring windows updates, and sometimes restarts in the process.

Is this normal for a new computer, or is something slowing me down here?

Thanks in advance for helping the noob.

Yes, it is possible for window update to run for 4 hours for a new computer. Repeated restart is normal for window to apply update correctly. I think during the update process, the most important factor is the internet speed. Also, even if you have very fast internet, it does not guarantee fast download for update. This is because it also depends what physical medium you use for internet connection and how busy the update server is to send you the updates,.

Thank you Pyree!

That helps me out a lot. The new machine seems to have settled into its groove.

Now I have to see how long I can wait before I add an SSD. That looks to me like the best upgrade since I'm not a gamer and don't need a very decent graphics card.
