Was on the brink of buying new PC with Athlon xp2800+ CPU,but have heard the new Barton 3000+ chip is released this week/month.
Obviously the 3000 will be more expensive...but I am thinking long term..I want this system to last me 4-5 years without needing to upgrade to quicker processor.
Is it generally advisable to pay top whack &go for the most powerful processor or would the 2800+ be just as powerful?
Would appreciate your comments guys...Thanks.

i would wait til there are some decent reviews done of the bartons.the extra 256kb of l2 cache obviously makes the barton desirable but the 3000 barton is actually clocked a bit lower than the 2800 tbred.wait and see how well it performs.

no matter how hard you try, you can't polish a turd. :]

Buy an XP2800+. According to the review of the XP3000+ in Tom's Hardware, the lower clock speed of the XP3000+ make it slower than the XP2800+ in some benchmarks. And the price difference isn't worth the slight performance gained by the larger cache.

AXP 2800+ is a better buy. Many times it's faster than AXP 3000+ and when it's slower, not much. The diference is not noticable. Plus AXP 2800+ costs much less than AXP 3000+
