When Do I Defrag???

Have a Dell OptiPlex GX60S Celeron, 128MB, 40GB.

Been cleaning system disk, deleting cookies and deleting the temp. files
weekly now and PC seems a little faster now. Should I be emptying the
Recycle Bin also (last done about 6 months ago)?

I have NEVER defragged and have had this PC for 1.5 years now (guess I
use PC about 10 hours a week). I do analyze after cleaning system and
it always says (No Need to Defrag) so I don't do it. Also, there are
not too many red lines in graph.

Should I defrag anyway? How long does it take to defrag and is it easy
to do? If it says not to defrag will it hurt my PC if I do defrag?

You haven't emptied the Recycle Bin in over 6 months?! Good grief! Yes, by
all means, empty it now. And every couple of days from now on. And go get
some more RAM. Like about 512 MB more, at least. A system running Windows
XP with only 128 MB of RAM is going to be a pig. Dead slow, at best. Run
defrag, it will take some time, but not forever.

Disable any screen saver you may have as this will cause defrag to restart
whenever it runs. You can enable your screensaver when you are done with
the defrag. It's easy to do. Simply go to Start>All
Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. Your system will not
be harmed by running the defragmentation tool. But absolutely go get some
more RAM. Your system will be much faster for it.

Click start, RIGHT-CLICK my computer, select "manage" select "Disk
Defragmenter" (towards the bottom of the list). Click analyze, and
view details. If total fragmentation or file fragmentation is over
5%, I usually recommend a defrag.

I went to a call on friday for an 18-month old dimension 4600. The
comptuer was 49% file fragmented, which is just nasty. A few weeks
ago I also defragged a computer for a 4600c, and the customer called
me back up wondering what I did to make the computer so much faster.

I also perform BIOS upgrades when I can. You can go to dell.com,
select home/home office link at lower-left, then pull-down "support",
select downloads, select your model computer and select "FlashBIOS
upgrades"

Thanks for that info. I took an interesting trip through My Computer,
Manage, etc. Stuff I didn't know was there.

(I clicked START, but didn't find My Computer, so just RIGHT-CLICKED
on the My Computer icon on desk top.)

Defrag can be found by Right-Click Start> Programs> Acessories> System tools

Yes it's easy to do but to be perfectly honest, it'll not make much
difference on an average home PC where there is still lots of disk space
free.

Some IT support people suggest it as a cure to all ailments

another note to that,....if you have GoBack on your system, disable it completely before doing a defrag, otherwise it will never start back up again right. GoBack is trying to keep working while defragging and it can't work correctly.

Using Widows XP Pro and know I have Restore but not at all familiar with
GoBack. Where would GoBack be if I had it and where do I go to disable
it if I have it at all? Thanks. Al

It's a Symantec (or Roxio) program... You *should* know if you've installed it,
or not! <g>

If you don't, or think your system might have come with it, preinstalled,
have a look at your Programs (Start | Programs | ...).

And funnily enough i`ve witnessed it work when one of the PCs in work was
fubarred - Word was crashing constantly, and a defrag sorted it.

GoBack is a Roxio program and is a standalone product. I've had it on all my computers and love it. It's saved files that have been deleted and not able to be restored and a lot of other things.

Suggestion: Use scandisk BEFORE defrag. It willl 'sort' things out. Defrag puts in an orderly manner
wherein it's quicker to access, however, if scandisk isn't used first to 'fix it' then all defrag does is order
the fubarred stuff....best to always run scandisk BEFORE defragging.
