BK flipper upgrade

The lower flippers on a recently acquired BK don't seem strong enough.
Very tough to get balls up the ramps. This is my first non-DMD machine
so I did a little research on the group and on Clay's site.

It seems that these old flippers had drawbacks and can be upgraded to
newer DMD era flippers. My plan is to order the baseplates and
associated rebuild kits but do people stick with the original SFL-19
400/30-750 DC coils or upgrade to modern coils. I can't find a lot of
info on that. I realize that voltages are different so that is a
complication.

If anyone has time to go over this a bit on a quiet Saturday evening,
I'd appreciate it.

thanks,
Mark

A BK with weak lower flippers, is one lousy playing game. Most Ive
come acrossed have played that way. I put new everything into my lower
BK flippers, including the coils, because they were real "crisp"
looking. New flipper switches as well. The difference was rediculous.
You can easily make the left ramp from a cradled ball. A strong shot
up the center ramp, will make at least one target. I personally feel
like you dont need to convert, but Its up to you, and the kind of parts
you want to have on hand.

Thanks Del,
Nice to hear it can be made to work properly. My only other experience
with BK was at Allentown last year and it was the same thing. The owner
blamed it on the power in the building...who knows?

Anyway, since I have all DMD games at this point, I'll probably upgrade
the flippers. But I'd love to hear the opinions of others especially
regarding the coils.

I'll call Steve Young on Monday and place the order. It'll be good to
hear his advice as well.

One problem with most older Wms games is the coil stop is built into the flipper
bracket, so it's not replaceable. Over time the stop gets worn and most people
won't bother replacing the bracket. Replacing it with a WPC style bracket is
essentially the exact same bracket with the exception of a replaceable coil
stop.

Do this mod, then rebuild your flippers with new sleeves, plungers, crank/link
and spring - no need to change the coils. They're plenty powerful for the game.
My BK with flippers rebuilt using whatever used parts I had on hand is plenty
powerful as far as shots making it up the ramps.

Mark -

As others have said, when I replaced the mounts with the new ones with the
removable coil stops, the diference was astounding. Did not take long at
all, and all parts I needed I for at Pinball Resource. I'd say change the
baseplates, put new coils and sleeves (same coil #) and you should be good
to go. That did it for my machine.

Good Luck!

Chris
