I'm trying to get extra RAM for my CQ56 but all the specs I come up with have a number following the CQ56 and I cannot find such a number on my laptop!

Welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums!

Download and run "SPECCY" - this will give you details of the computer and everything inside it; along with serial numbers.

Another good program is "Belarc Advisor" - this also will give you a wealth of information.

Your unit has a product number and serial number that identifies its specific model. The serial number is usually located on the bottom of your notebook. You can go to hp.com and enter the product number in and obtain the specifications for your specific unit. Hope this helps.

SPECCY does not show which model compaq presario 56 one has. It shows basically what's in your device manager. Don't waste your time, like I did. It still did not answer the topic being discussed.
