I have a Dimension D-300, original video card and monitor. Now fine black
horizontal lines flicker on the screen. How can I tell if it's the monitor
or video card that's causing the problem? Thanks Jeff

Swap the monitor if you or a friend/neighbor have a small one handy. Other
than that the best you can do is to reseat or swap the video card.

Personally, I'd borrow an old 15" CRT to check it if it were mine (as a
first step)....

That's what I thought. I can swap the monitor with mine and see if that's
the problem. I will also reseat the video card. It maybe slowly dying
because it needed a new power supply a few weeks ago. I guess it's time to
retire it. Thanks

I suspect the video card, I've seen similar things happen with bad video
ram (VRAM), but I've never seen this happen because of a bad monitor.

- I've seen LCD monitors lose rows or columns of pixels, but they never
'flicker', when they're gone they're gone in every case that I've seen.

- A CRT with a bad high voltage section, or with the brightness turned WAY
too high, might show fine horizontal lines, but white not black.

I've also seen freaky things like this happen with an incorrect or bad
video driver. You might try updating and/or reinstalling the video driver.

First thing I would look for is a new desk or ceiling fan in the room, or
perhaps an old one.
I have also seen this caused by a cell phone DC charger plugged to the same
power strip as a PC system.
