restore disk question

I have a new gateway laptop. Upon starting I get an error message from
Norton.
I researched this error message from symantecs, and tried all the fixes.
As a last resort they recommend you uninstall norton and reinstall.
Question is I am looking at the restore disks and instructions and it
looks like you can only do a complete system reinstall, not just a certain
program.
Is this true? And if so , what is my recourse?

Much regards Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Using Windows Explorer to keep from activating the AUTORUN.INF file on
the CD..... The Red disk should have a folder on it called Apps and
under that will be all the applications automatically installed on
your HD when doing a restoration. Under that Apps folder is a folder
called Norton which is where your NAV application resides. There you
will find SETUP.EXE to install the NAV app.

Unlike the older restoration CDs that came with computers with the
Gateway name on them, the new Red ones do not give you a menu to
separately install the applications on the CD. You have to go in
manually and do that.

Hope this helps....

If your new laptop has a built in recovery option that you can invoke from
within Windows, it may also have just an application recovery function. The
last retail Gateway I worked on had it and you could select the app you
wanted to install. If you don't have the built in recovery and only have the
cd's try putting each disk in the drive and let it autorun. See if you get
an application recovery option.

Thanks Ed. I am not sure what you mean by the red disk. This
is my first gateway, that didnt come with all backup disks. The Gateway
came with six blank cdr,s. There is a program that you can only use once,
that burns the restore feature onto five disks. Plus they partitioned my
hard drive, and put the restore feature on that also. But I now see a part
that says application and driver reinstall. I will try that, thanks. I much
preferred having the backups.

Ed, while I have your attention, one more thing please?
This laptop 4028gz came with a simple "gateway users notebook guide" of
about 100 pages, very simplistic for an experienced user. Question I have
is that on page 6 of this manual it tells you, that in addition to this
users guide, there is a "using your computer guide" included on your
harddrive, which will give you more detailed information on power setting
as well as other topics. Well when going to the hard drive, it is just a
duplicate of the same "gateway users notebook guide" that they gave me.
Now I really dont need this, but did gateway make a mistake with this?

Much regards Jerry

Then you have what Tweek suggested. I knew Gateway had gone to hell
but didn't know that Gateway had fallen that low as to follow suit of
the other half assed junk dealers but it seems as though they have.
My 450 is only two years old but did come with the two restoration
disks (Red & Blue) but now it seems that GW has followed suit and is
not offering restoration disks but putting the whole thing on the HD.
Now how much money did that save them, 5 cents, 10 cents per
system....

Mine came with a 318 page manual that covered just about everything
about the physical laptop and basics concerning XP. There was no need
to add anything further on the HD. Again, seems as though gateway is
going as cheap as they can and putting everything on the HD. Real
smart move in case the system quits and you don't have physical
help/backups in hand. BTW, Start/Help & Support is a great help
interface concerning XP.

I'm sorry I can't help you any further but it just seems that today's
Gateway is not giving their customers any of the resources needed to
maintain their systems like they use to when they were a creditable
and quality company.

As has been stated on here and other places before, this is the reason
why people are moving towards having their systems built by credible
local builders. Problem is, laptops must still come from the large
corporate shafters because as of yet, you still can't build them
locally.

Just a sad story about systems without restoration disks... A
friend's daughter got a new computer for college. It was one of those
cheap pieces of junk with the HP name printed on it. As with all
corporate pieces of computer junk now on the market, it didn't come
with a restoration disk. The big problem was, she didn't know what a
restoration disk was and nothing in the single sheet of instructions
in 6 languages that came with the system did it say anything about
creating the restoration disks by burning them from the HD. Well,
something finally went wrong and she couldn't get the thing to boot
without tons of error messages popping up so a restoration was in
order. Guess what! No restoration disk(s) and No Operating System
(XP) disk. Tech support in India and her couldn't communicate because
she couldn't understand them so that wasn't any help. By friend
finally took this new machine, which was still under warranty, to a
reputable local builder and paid him to get all the right drivers and
a copy of XP on the system. He also purchased a copy of XP for this.
Now they have a Real restoration disk (ghost) and real OS disk for the
computer. Needless to say, he and her will be buying local built
computers from now on (unless it is a laptop sad to say).

Sorry about getting off on a soapbox there......

But this laptop was a gift for fathers day, and I could not complain
about getting a gateway. It is my first laptop after all these years.
I used to love gateway. My older 386sx and 486dx266 are still
running to this day in other peoples homes, where I fixed up some senior
citizens with my older equipment, so they can do word processing and surf
the net. A new battery every couple of years, and a new power supply every
couple also, and they still run. But times are different now with Gateway.

Much regards

Lucky you, I got a tie! But, when I took the tie out of the box, it
had a tag on the back that said to wear it proudly when redeeming the
coupon on the back. The coupon was a 7 day Bahamian Cruise for my
wife and myself from the kids. Between me and you and the fence post
though, the tie really is awful looking (grin).

So did I Jerry. I can remember a Pentium II I had that was actually
assembled in the States with support actually by English speaking
people from the States. That was in the mid 90's. Since then, I
purchased two more personal systems from Gateway with each one
declining in quality and both without any quality support at all. The
450 laptop is not personal but a business purchase so it comes under a
different support mechanism than those purchased by the public. GW
keeps their business support manned by English speaking people from
the States and throws their poor general public purchasers to
non-English speaking third world countries.

BTW, did you get your restoration CD(s) burned that Tweek covered in
his message?

Regards,
Ed

Thanks Ed. Have a nice vacation. Thanks Tweek also. I finally
