There's nothing wrong with running a successful business. Just because
it's a hobby to you doesn't mean what he does is wrong.
By the way, there is a spoon. In fact, I have a whole drawer full. If

Dude.. are you a moron?
Without people like Art, Bob Roberts, etc... there wouldn't BE a hobby as
there would be no supply of parts.
Let's face it, without people like Art with pockets deep enough and
warehouses big enough to encourage the old Ops to open up their warehouses
there would be NO ready supply of replacements on the market.
Just go away...

If this hobby / newsgroup is going to come down against people making a few
bucks . . . well I may be guilty of that. I hope it doesn't come to that
though. I don't know what the definition of "pimping the hobby" is.
Making money is not a crime. Making obscene amounts of money has never
seemed to be a crime either (At least they haven't busted Gates for it yet
;-) The hobby is great because all kinds of people are involved !!
Art, Bob Roberts, Rick Schieve, Cliffy, Darin Jacobs . . . etc (Lots more
names on this list) are all good people and dedicated to the hobby despite
the fact they may have made a few bucks over time on it. Heck if this is
their sole income they better make alot !!
I hope this doesn't go against anyone making money on the hobby or I guess
I'll have to bail also . . . :-(

While many of the guys named in this thread so far are great sellers and ARE
true "assets to the hobby" - I'll kindly disagree on Art and Todd.. and I'm
leaving it at that. I've beat that drum plenty of times already.
I guess what I'm trying to say, in a nutshell, is just because somebody sold you
something, or gave you something, that doesn't make the rest of what they do
cool or beneficial to the hobby. So let's not blindly place them on an
undeserved pedestal.
Surely many of you will disagree with me and that's fine. I know there's others
that don't. And that's good enough for me. : )

You left yourself out, Kerry, another great asset to the hobby
And
no, I couldn't survive myself let alone feed and house my family on
pinball protectors and game restorations. I have a feeling that some of
us do it for the love of the games and some do indeed do it for the
money. No law against either as far as I know. Let the market determine
the value of your product, I say. If no one likes it, no one will buy
it. If there is a need there will always be someone to fill it

>john, I didn't realize that owning games myself was a requirement to be a

member of what? i simply stated how -i- felt people pimp the hobby. if
you don't personally own or PLAY pinball, i just have a real hard time
seeing the love of the hobby in someone.
>Did you know that the first poll on rgp showed out of 52 respondents, 32
didn't own any games ?
considering when that poll was taken, i would say that was a massive
amount of people owning games. wouldn't you? also, you can bet probably
99% of those people played pinball on a regular basis.
>Lots of big names responded to that poll. Would you
consider them not really part of rgp too ?
everyone who posts here is part of rgp, it is a newsgroup. you simply
need to read or post to be a part of that. to be part of the hobby, i
feel you should AT LEAST own machines in a personal collection or AT
WORST -PLAY- pinball on a regular basis to not fall in the PTH
category. how many people on the newsgroup DON'T play pinball on at
least a weekly basis on average? i would say almost everyone.
>Thankfully those that started rgp didn't limit membership or moderate it.
sure, why would they? DID I EVER SAY TO LIMIT MEMBERSHIP OR MODERATE
RGP? you falling off base.
Rgp has had it's ups and downs. But the variety of posters including
designers, manufacturers, programmers, operators, enthusiasts,
collectors,
hobbyists, distributors, show organizers, tournament organizers,
restorers,

i think the people who make rgp great don't fall under the category or
PTH. you seem to be turning this into a rgp thing when i only was
stating how certain people PIMP THE HOBBY.
people who pth can post on rgp all they want just as i can bash them
for it. they do nothing out of caring for anything or anyone except
themselves.

I have to agree with Cliffy on this one. Lloyd seems to go out of his
way to help folks. I know he was very helpful to me when Istarted
collecting. He had nothing to gain from helping me, and still gave of
his time. While it may be true that his position as an op gives him
additional time to do so (I do not live his life or run his business so
I do not know), he certainly does not have an obligation to help
others. I choose to not question that generosity or his motives, as I
would not question Koz's generosity or motives when he shares playing
tips or organizes Pinbrawl. I assume that both do it out of a
combination for love of the hobby and self interest, both of which are
no problem for me.
There are plenty of folks who could help and have the time to do so who
choose not to help. Obviously, why folks choose to help (or not help)
is open to interpretation, but my read (for what it is worth) is that
Lloyd (and the other usual suspects) does so as a service to the
pinball community. Others may see it differently, and they are
certainly entitled to their opinion.
I certainly do not have Koz's level of experience with the pinball
world, and maybe when I do I will share his skepticism. I do agree
that there are some folks who seem to appear on the group only when
there is a dollar to be made, and seldom at other times. By the same
token, I see other folks who are here often, offering help, tips and
advice. In most cases, the hobby gets more benefit from their efforts
than they do as individuals. I think that there are two types of folks
who "turn coin" on the hobby. The PTH designation and definition works
for some. But, there is a second group, who are in business, but
helping the hobby. They make a buck here and there, but they really
seem to care. Maybe they have me fooled, but I do not think so.
In my mind, there are guys who are distinctly in each group, and guys
who move back and forth between the two. For me, Lloyd, Ray, Cliffy,
Kerry, John, Daina and the other obvious suspects (sorry to those I
left out) fall into the category of doing business while providing a
valuable service to the community.
There are other folks (not those mentioned above) who seem to show up
only when there is a buck to be made, but that is life and business.
There is nothing wrong with making a living on coin op machines, after
all, that is what the machines were designed to do.
But, I agree with Koz that in some cases, the are some folks seem to
want both the money and credit for being humanitarians and providing
service to the community. Sometimes, that can be a little cloying. I
probably would not express it the same way, but I understand the
underlying feeling.

I know you exluced ops, but I was thinking... Wouldn't an op, by
definition, be "pimping" his pinball machines?
You know, put 'em on the corner, expect 'em to earn, bitch slap them a

Just because someone posts 150 times a day to this newsgroup does NOT make them
a spokesperson for it. Too many of the good folks like you Kerry have been run
off because of the constant attacks that are disguised as being "for the good of
the hobby" or "protecting the newbies" or "hey, it's my opinion and I can spew

seemed to limit his posting to less than 50 times a day, so he was easier to
filter out.
>Making money is not a crime. Making obscene amounts of money has never
>seemed to be a crime either (At least they haven't busted Gates for it yet

The real hilarity of this situation is the fact that some of these "anti anyone
making a buck" guys actually claim to own their own business. You have to wonder
how that's working out for them???
>I hope this doesn't go against anyone making money on the hobby or I guess
>I'll have to bail also . . . :-(
If you do, and too many more people follow, it's just Koz and Gary on this
board. I'm sure a lot more folks would like to see you stay than have that
happen. :-)

I see the light now!
No longer will I visit grocery stores. They don't grow and package the
food themselves so they're just pimping the food.
I'm not going to buy parts for my classic car at any junkyard that
doesn't have running cars because they're just pimping the cars.
I was on my way to Home Depot tonight after work but instead I went
straight home. They don't sell complete houses so why should I buy from
them? They're just hoping to make money off me. Sure, they have free
how-to clinics and every month host free clinics for parents and their
children to make and decorate little knick knacks, but really they're
just giving away small dollar items in the anticipation of my future
business. They're just pimping the homeowner.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to see if there are any strawberries
left in my strawberry patch. I don't have much food left in the house
and the farmer's market isn't until the weekend.

I'm not a member of the pinball scene (though someday I hope to own a
Triple Strike) so this question may be simple to the regulars, but what
have you done for "the hobby"?

I think some of y'all are being a little harsh
on John. I understand the drift of what he's
trying to say, and I do agree with him 100%.
It must be something with the written word vs.
the spoken, but I know what he means. I'd say
not to take this personal if it doesn't fit the description
he's given. It's simply his view, and probably
the view of a number of folks that really care
about pinball, and what it's become of late.
And yes, he does his share for "The Hobby",
just like many other fine folks do.

As much as I like koz when I saw that he didnt consider you part of the
group, well, I think everyone can see he just reached a little too far
with that one
I mean, c'mon. Not a part of the groups? Lloyd *is*
the
welcome wagon! No one covers the newbies with first helps more than
Lloyd. No one. Beyond that he's always there to share absolutely freely
his knowledge of the games.
cliffy,
WAKE UP! i didn't say that.
shesh!
how did you twist me saying SOME people pth into me saying that lloyd
wasn't part of rgp?
please re-read, your posting untruths.

John, here is the actual quote from your post. Please, please don't
accuse me of spreading untruths. Please, ok? You know me better than
that. Thanks

Re-reading your definition, I noticed that Gene Cunningham not only "makes parts
that support the collector market", but he also meets the all-important rule of
actually collecting pinball machines. And yet you have never cut him a break. I
submit that you are not following your own ruleset.
Frankly, I'm a free enough thinker to suggest to you that someone could come
along and offer something to this community that people would find value in, and
that person(s) might not even own any pinball machines themselves (gasp!). I
know enthusiasts that love pinball, but because of whatever reason don't own any
machines. Does that make their involvement in the hobby less important than
yours? Or is that acceptable as long as they aren't selling something to all of
us? These are complicated rules you have come up with, we all need to be clear
so we can avoid your scorn and wrath sir.
I honestly believe that your deep-down motivations are for the good of
pinballdom. But attacking anyone that tries to turn a dime on pinball seems like
a poor use of your abilities.

Hang on. I'm getting bloody confused here.
Am i reading RGVAC or RGP???
I'm sure i've never subscribed to RGP.

You're reading BOTH... it's cross posted to rgp, rgvac, and rgvam.
So all the rgp'ers are pissing off all the rgvac'ers and all the rgvac'ers
are pissing off all the rgp'ers...

Umm, what did I do?
Archived from groups: rec.games.video.arcade.collecting (More info?)
Many of us collect both pins and vids so we subscribe to both. However,
in this case, and as Steve pointed out, the original posts were cross
posted to all 3 groups. Art himself cross posted so all the replies got
crossed too. ooops
