Well, I don't have the option of buy an XP because my motherboard doesn't support it. What speeds do the Thunderbirds go up to? 1ghz? Durons up to.. 1.3ghz?
aah... I thought it might be something like that..
What board do you have? Thunderbirds went up to 1.4Ghz, but that was (i think) only on a 133Mhz FSB. I think Durons DO go to 1.3Ghz though, so you're right there.
I have a Gigabyte 7IXE4 motherboard. AMD tells me that the XPs are supported (they'll clock down) but i don't really want to spend £40/£50 on a chip and it not work.
Looking at Tom's latest article of loads of processors, the fastest 100Mhz FSB Thunderbird is 1.3Ghz, so get one of those if you can. If You can get an XP1700+ cheaply I'd still recommed one though, coz they run a bit cooler, and if you later get a better mobo (& if you happen to get a T-bred 'B' XP) then you'll be able to OC it quite well, but Thunderbirds run very hot, especially the faster ones, so wouldn't OC very well.
hmm. THink i'll probably get a Duron if the Tbirds run hot. Heat isn't really a problem, my 750@900 Duron runs at39 degrees underload, but if the Tbirds run hotter than the Durons i may have some trouble :/
Ok well they made T-Bird all the way up to 1.4Ghz like sum of u said...but they made them in 100 AND 133MHz FSB flavours.....
a Duron is a waste of money ur MUCH better off with the T-Bird than the Duron...a T-Bird will show a MUCH bigger performance difference the a Duron.......256KB of L2 cache vs 64KB of L2 cache makes a big difference regardless if its only 100Mhz FSB.......
