I want to know opinions on which processor to choose for my new system. 2600+with 333fsb or the 2500"Barton" The "Barton" is about $60-70 cheaper than the Tbred. I will not overclock either anytime soon. Definately not in the first year of use. As I'm upgrading from a PII 400Mhz I don't think I will notice the difference between either one. What are your thoughts?

Proposed system:

2500 Barton or 2600 Tbred 333fsb
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
CORSAIR MEMORY XMS (Twin Pack) 512MB PC-2700LLPT
Radeon 9700 Pro
2 Western Digital SATA 10Krpm Raptor Drives (if available by 14th of March)

My bad Tbred not Tberd...........
Edited by Cuda on 02/26/03 10:18 PM.

First things first the amd processr you are referring to is a TBRED as in Throughbred, the old amd processors were tbirds (before the xp)...

anyways either one you go with will yield similar performance...if I WAS overclockign I would stay away from the Barton since they do not overclock as well. Personally I would go with the TBRED

Similar, but considering how Bartons are clocked noticably lower than an equally PRed TBred, a TBred with a higher PR will really smack that Barton. Maybe not noticably to the naked eye, but certainly to any benchmark.

So far I have yet to read of anyone OCing a TBredB any better or worse than a Barton. Theoretically they OC about the same.

I thought I read that the barton didnt overclock as well somewhere or maybe I was dreaming...but I do agree with the tbred out performing because of the very aggressive PR ratings of the Bartons

I know the 3000+ reached 2.4 ghz (IIRC) in one of the tests I saw. A 15% overclock isn't anything to write home about, but...I wonder if the 2500+ is the same core just underclocked for price-point. It wouldn't surprise me if 2500+ would easily reach 3000+ speeds with good cooling, if not higher. I've actually been looking forward to the release of the 2500+, thinking maybe it's the 1700+ t-bred of the Barton cores.

I want to move to space, so I can overclock processors cooled to absolute zero.

Is the Tbred worth the extra cash if you will not overclock? Is it possible that the 2500+ Barton would overclock to near it's big brothers speed of 2.5Ghz if I decide to in the future? see Tomshardware review overclocked the 3000+barton to 2.5Ghz

http://www17.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030210/barton-15.html

According to most of the benchmarks in this review the Barton performed better than the Tbred 2600+
