Scanner for large pictures

Hello,
Has today's technology advanced enough so that one can use a hand scanner to capture LARGE (too me 8/11 is not large) photos. I have captured many smaller older family pictures but there are some huge ones hanging on family walls that I would love to get a digital image. Taking photos is the only way currently but there are always risks of glares. Most people will NOT let you take it out of the house to a professional environment where one can set up a good shot or even set it up on a table in their house to get a good shot. Bottom line, is there any device that will let you capture partial images and then later pull all the separate images together on computer and then edit into a single photo document

if you read, it allows you to Combine: Attach multiple photos vertically or horizontally to create one final photo
