Hey all, I have read that you can over clock your processer to make it go
faster and i no that alot of people dont advise it but my processers max
speed is 1200mhz but runs at 700mhz how do i change this? do i need to
overclock?

Go into the Bios and correctly set your Front Side Bus and CPU
Frequency. If you still have a Manual for your computer
it will explain how to do it. Otherwise we can help you here if we have
the CPU and Motherboard make and model.

Sure that it runs behind the specs of the processor.Try, if intel, download the
processor frequency utility from intel,or if its a P4 the processor info
utility,then
see what specs it gives you.For overclocking, try search at google.com
Be advised though, you better know the pros and cons of
overclocking,if...youre
board is even set up to change the settings.

P3 never went past 1ghz did it? Anyway you have a P3/700mhz i bet. Umm, also
if the cpu really is faster then 700 but is showing 700 it might be caused
by the bios settings or the computer being set for laptop setting or
something other then desktop. then it will auto slow the cpu down to run
cooler and more quiet.

I believe what's on the web site is that your motherboard can handle up to a
1200 mHz processor. What they're referring to is if you buy another
processor.
Overclocking is fairly easy if you've got the right hardware. BUT, it's
also easy to destroy your system while doing it!!! I'd suggest that you go
to http://www.overclockers.com/ for more info on how to do it.

Your system runs at 700 MHz because you have a 700 MHz CPU, if your machine
is a Dimension XPS T700r. PIII CPUs are multiplier locked, in your case to
7X.
The normal way to overclock a PIII machine was to raise the FSB (front side
bus) frequency, but a Dell machine probably has no such settings.
Where did it say on the "Dell website" that it could go to 1200? (In the
forums, I suppose.)
The XPS T_ uses a 440BX chipset and Slot 1, so the fastest CPU you could
normally use is a 10X100=1GHz. (The fastest CPU Dell lists for the machine
is an 850, though.) If you try to upgrade the CPU, make sure to *not* get
one for a 133 MHz FSB (front side bus), as there may not be any simple way
to get the Dell's bus to run at that. (Some makers permitted 133, like in a
Soyo mainboard that I used a few years ago. I haven't heard of being able to
get that on a Dell.) You might end up with a 7.5X133 MHz (1 GHz) CPU running
at 750 MHz (7.5X100).
You may be able to run a "Tualatin" Celeron (with a 100 MHz FSB) by using a
Socket 370 to Slot 1 adapter. Whether the BIOS would recognize something
like that properly, I have no idea. It may be possible to make it work by
tricks like force-flashing an Intel BIOS on the board, but that's best done
by advanced users.
Sorry that I can't be more encouraging.
Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Thanks for all your help, still dont get thw hang of this overcloking stuff,
better leave it then, im just wondering if you wanted is there anyway to

I actually have one of those adapters on my shelf.
They worked fine in any slot 1 machine as long as the CPU type was supported
by BIOS.
