Keeping desktop capability and still use a laptop docking station

I have a desktop computer at home that I use for many things (small business) but I also work from home occasionally and need my work laptop to do that. What is the best configuration for me to use the laptop from home but still be able to use the convenience of my desktop monitor/keyboard/mouse? Shoud I use a docking station? but I don't want to unhook my desktop..Any advice?

If you have the same business applications on your desktop, just network the 2 systems and use the desktop but save the files to the laptop to take back to work.
