Just set up a wireless network between my desktop and laptop both using
XP (one home and one Pro)

Can see all drives and contents on the other computer from each computer
(if you get my meaning) but if I try to copy a file from one to the
other, or edit a file on the other computer I get the message that I do
not have the necessary permissions,

I have missed something very simple I am sure.

I have enabled sharing on the drives and set it that the other computer
can view and alter the files.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Sharing a folder generally creates "read" permissions, you would need to
adjust permissions on the shared folders to allow changing (editing) them.
