I have a set of legs for my Dredd that I want to make gold. Not really
wanting to fork out the $75 for a set of new ones with shipping at this
time. Is there any particular method of spraying or brand or spray
that will work out best? I dont think I would need to rough up the
legs with 1000 grit sand paper but just wanted to check first. Or do I?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, Rustolium also makes a hammered finish. The one that I seem to
like best is made by Hammerite.Called Hammertone.Mark is right. It is
fool proof.It seems to cover anything,even a little rust.And it's good
for rust prevention too.Great stuff. Wal-Mart carries the Rustolium
version. Not sure about the Hammerite.I get it at my local hardware
store. I find more uses for it all the time.Good luck,Walt

In restoring my Flight 2000, I had a similar problem with the stock
powder-coated silver legs. Since taking them to be stripped and re-
powder-coated seemed to be overkill, I turned to paint.

I found a spray paint that gives EXACTLY the look of the gold legs. I
assume that you are looking for the 'hammered gold' look rather than the
shiny gold plated look, right?

The product is by Krylon - it's called Hammered XXXX (where XXXX is the
color - Hammered Silver in my case). It is a no-prime thing and it goes
on thick - so it covers up a LOT of sins. I'm positive there is a gold.

A quick test would be to buy a can, then paint an old chunk of metal -
you'll see what I mean. That'll tell you if you like the effect.

It turned out _AWESOME_ on the legs - so good that I'm now stripping
down and painting the coin door + bracket - which was done with the same
treatment.

It's idiot-proof, too..

Actually.. now that you mention it.. the stuff I used is probably
Rustoleum (I don't have the can handy). Anyway, most of the gold-tone
legs that I've seen have the hammered finish, so I think this would be
the ticket.

Just did my IJ legs with Rust-oleum, Metallic Finish Gold. The can shows a
very shiney finish but they did'nt turn out that way at all and its not
Hammertoned at all either . I steel wooled each leg for 45 minutes front
and back and then wiped them off with a rag real good, sprayed the fronts of
the legs, let them dry for 24 hours before touching and then did the back
sides and let them dry again for another 24 hours before touching them.
They turned out GREAT, could'nt be happier. You will want the legs laying
flat when spraying and drying, not in a upright position. It will help to
not get any runs in the paint.

Good luck,

I thought the legs were smooth. Am I wrong on this? Were they a
hammered or textured finish?

Thanks,
