I bought a computer for my son a year ago and asked for the best gaming processor they put in a AMD Sempron 3100+. My son tells me that it is not good enough for any of the games he wants to play. He says many of the games state that the basic requirement to play them is a AMD Athlon 64×2 4400+ or any Intel Core 2 Duo. Are these a huge difference from what he has got and would it cost alot to replace his processor with one of these. Also will they too only last about a year and I will have to get something better again. I just can't keep up with it all financially. Should I get a really good processor that would last much longer. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Who ever sold you a Sempron 3100+ for gaming is a smacktard...

Intel Core 2 Duo - with 500GB hard disk, ATI 4870 video card or a Nvidia GT260, Gigabyte EP45 motherboard and 3GB of ram if you have XP..

How much did you pay for your "gaming processor computer" i bet it was a lot too..

Semprons werent even made a year a go.. especially 3100+ whats that socket 939 or 754...

Tsk Tsk. This recommend system will last for ages and will cost around £500

That CPU isn't that good really but i suspect that even if you could upgrade to a AMD X2 with the motherboard you have you might also have an older graphics card.
The newer games that will push that CPU also require at least Nvidia 8600 or ATI 8750.
As for how long hardware is able to run newer games it's a couple of years before they start to struggle bad.
If you want to game on a budget stay away from the latest hardware, theres a big premium on it, best to buy midrange stuff.
This site has some pretty good guides that are updated pretty frequently on builds for different budgets.
Your best to post exactly what motherboard and graphics card he has currently for some worthwhile advice though on where to spend your money.

So they're more commercially minded than you are and probably making more money :p

If you're gonna do it you might as well be blatant about it, it also allows us to review what you're offering and make comment on it.
