We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided (to) remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks (thru January 24th). During that time you will have access to the beta even if the download number exceeds the 2.5 million unit limit.
After a daylong rollercoaster drama during which Windows 7 Beta gave us a false-alarm release followed by a server smackdown, Microsoft is finally handing out honest to goodness product keys for the beta.

I don't see why Microsoft would limit the number of downloads at all. The more (unpaid) testers the better, isn't it? Also, the more enthusiasts spending their time with Windows 7 Beta, the fewer left to play with Linux and other competing systems.
