have Dell Inspiron 8000 and having problems. freeze, reboot, can't find hard
drive... after a while it finally booted. but reboots the fan gets loud and
disk clicks from time to time.

don't know if I have to replace the hard drive or if there is something else
like connection to disk bad with fan kicking on.

this laptop is never on network. no viruses. it's used for self employed
worker so I know it's hardware related and not software. I just don't want
to replace disk to find out it's something else. any advice or thoughts on
the problem or knowledge of diag tools?

Thanks in advance for any help!

You should not be hearing a thing from the hard drive, much less clicking
noises. I would make sure all data is backed up as soon as possible and run
Check Disk.

Determine the manufacturer of the hard drive, download the drive manufacturer's
free diagnostics, run them and see... Ben Myers

Check Disk is a poor choice for diagnostic software. See my earlier message...

My reply to the OP was not meant to infer that Check Disk and only Check
Disk be run to determine if any problems exist with the OP's hard drive.
Check Disk is already on an XP system, so no downloading is required.

Too true. But it is still worse than a third rate diagnostic. ANY diagnostic
that runs through the layers and layers of Windows software is a poor
diagnostic. Manufacturer's hard drive diagnostics run down at the bare iron,
give 100% accurate information as to the state of a drive, and are often used by
drive manufacturers to test and recertify drives. Why settle for worse than
third rate?

Also, one other comment to the OP. If the hard drive has ANY defective sectors
at all, even if they have been successfully recovered, replace the drive.

Echoed! I replaced my original hard drive in my Dim. 4100 late last summer
after MONTHS of weird noises, like brrr sounds, and clicking and the
knowledge that I was getting more and more bad sectors. Procastinated til
one day the computer wouldn't boot properly...had techie friend standing
by to help me and long story short, new drive purchased, image off old
drive (contents) put onto new one and all has been well ever since. Run
the THOROUGH Scan/Check disk too, not the quick one. The thorough one is
the one that will tell you if you have bad sectors.

If/when the OP runs Scandisk or WHATEVER diagnostic that will inform of
bad sectors, if none show up I will be totally shocked. By the time last
summer that my computer didn't boot properly, I'd been getting bad sectors
for probably close to a year, along with the weird noises.
