The "correct" temperature is anything under 90 degrees celsius, that's the maximum rating for the chip.

In practice you want to keep them as cool as possible. 60c is a bit on the high side, but within safety specs. At those temperatures you will be placing a lot of heat related stress on the socket and surrounding parts that are both near and under the CPU (yeah, there are parts inside the sockets on most motherboards). You may also experience operational instabilities, not related to the cpu, but because of the heat from the cpu.

The coolers AMD supplies are adequate to keep it from self-destructing, but not much more. I would suggest you look into an aftermarket cooler that is rated for your processor.

For XPs up to 1800 I usually use these:
<A HREF="http://www.spirecooler.com/asp/fcc.asp?ProdID=3" target="_new">http://www.spirecooler.com/asp/fcc.asp?ProdID=3</A>
For 2000 and up I use these:
<A HREF="http://www.spirecooler.com/asp/fcc.asp?ProdID=95" target="_new">http://www.spirecooler.com/asp/fcc.asp?ProdID=95</A>

A lot of people also like these coolers:
<A HREF="http://www.thermaltake.com/products/heatsink/v7.htm" target="_new">http://www.thermaltake.com/products/heatsink/v7.htm</A>

I would also suggest that you clean off the supplied heating pads that come with these coolers and use thermal grease instead. Arctic Silver is very popular, Radio Shack sells and equavalent product that is very good too. Most computer stores stock the stuff as well.

The application instructions for thermal grease are here:
<A HREF="http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm" target="_new">http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm</A>
(use the same method no matter what brand you buy).

Done right, you should be able to keep the idle temperatures of your CPU in the mid-40c range and it shouldn't get much over 50c under full load, in a comfortable room.

The PC you see in my SIG below.. was my first pc built bymyself, after doing alot of research, that is what i have chose.

basically when i was searching for my HSF.. i was alittle concered, because i was buying a xp2800, and at the time, alot of the website didn't say.. MADE FOR XP2800.. or whatever... so i didn't know which to get, and when people were telling me about speeds and DB i really didn't know what it Actually Sounded like. now that i actually OWN. and Personally Installed this thing, i will give you my little critique.

basically i chose the Volcano 7, #1 cause it had the copper based bottom, and that is need with my CPU.. ok here goes..

basically, the thing is tremendous.. no joke, i seriously did not think it was going to be this big and heavy, the thing is mad heavy, i thought it was gonna snap off the motherboard when i was putting the board in the case..

I have the HSF on low, because other then that, i'd think id go DEFF! this thing does get loud, i have my CPU running @ a nice stable 47c now.. case @ 30... underfull load, cpu might reach around 55 sometimes... but no higher then that....

so this thing deff does the job, but now that i am aware of how big and loud these guys are, i will be more prepared for when i build my next PC.

You should FIRST determine if it is heat that is cauzing the crashes, and not something unrelated.

Does it freeze when not doing anything? or only under load or gaming?
Is it random, or does it allways seem to happen after ~X minutes of activity?
Does it crash as much with the side of your case off?
Does the actual heatsink feel burning hot? (or stone cold)
