Why would dell dimension 8300 crash upon adding more memory?

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 and we tried to add more memory up to 2 GB and it crashed the system.

Now it says that the file for the system setup is either missing or corrupt. Cannot load the windows xp disk either, keeps looping on the error screen.

Should we just buy a new hard drive and return the upgraded memory?
