I have a desktop and a notebook -both running Windows XP. They talk to each
other through a router and a wireless access point. Copying big files - 5
Gig - over wireless will take a long time.

Is there a faster way to do it? Can I connect them together using some kind
of cable? They both have USB and firewire.

Thanks, Carol

Well, if both computers have a free Ethernet connector, a crossover Category 5
cable would let you connect them together at 100Mbit speeds.

An external hard drive with either USB or firewire would enable you to bypass a
networked connection completely, but it may not be much faster... Ben Myers

Only caveat is if the both have 100 baseT cards otherwise you will be
limited to 10 Mbit (NUG) on a CAT5 connection.

I'm not sure if this is the correct NG.., but it might not be a bad idea to
look into just burning a copy on a CD or DVD and just loading it on to the
new computer.., would that do it also..?

Maybe compressed or ZIPped and burned onto a DVD. I would not want to burn 8
CDs, more or less... Ben Myers

oh yeah, that's a real time saver... NOT!

Thanks for the reply. I'll get a crossover cable to try it.

Why a crossover cable (assuming that 10mbps Wireless B is the limiting
factor)? I'm also assuming the router has 100M bps ethernet ports as well?
Maybe 4 of them which if the router was purchased in the last 5 years
(obviously depending on your router/switch/access point combination)? If
you don't have the ports available on the router (no built in ethernet
switch) then a crossover cable direct pc to pc would be appropriate.
