Hi I'm planning on uprgrading my current computer and would like some feedback on a few issues... Right now I'm running:

Athlon 1700xp
Epox 8kha (kt266a)
radeon 8500
512mb pc 21000 ram
(around 7000 3dmarks)

I'm thinking about buying the following:

Athlon 2400xp
Radeon 9600pro (when it comes out)

I was wondering if I should buy a new motherboard memory combo... For 100 bucks for an NForce2 and 70 for 2700 memory is it really worth it? How much performance gain would I see if I did buy a new motherboard... Right now for the new processor and vid card im looking at about 300 bucks, would anyone reccomend any other routes to upgrade that would get me more bang for my buck. Should I just get a 9700pro after the prices drop when the new 350 stuff comes out? Absolutely any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated!

If I was going to upgrade right now I would be trying to get an Nforce2 Mobo and a 333FSB Athlon, along with 333FSB DDR RAM.

As for the Radeon 9600Pro, the jury's out on whether this is card is going to be slower than a 9500Pro - looks like it might be. Wait for the benchmarks.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend. At this point there is nothing wrong with what you have. If you are limitted to around 300.00. I would do what you said and wait until the price comes down on the 9700 pro. If you are planning on spending some $$$$.. By all means follow what the other person said. NForce 2 mobo (like the Asus A78NX), GOOD matched ram (like Corsair XMS LL) 333mhz if no over clock, 400mhz if you are planning to push a little, 333FSB CPU (2600+, 2700+, 2800+), and A good video card 9700pro or Ti4600. I cant express this enough, if you are going to buy an Nforce2 mobo and you are going to take advantage of the duel channel feture you need 2 sticks of GOOD Quality ram. Some ram companys offer matched ram for duel channel purposes. These are recommended. I hope this helps. Take care. Good luck. Please post your decision.

Hang in there. It can only get better!

the R350 stuff will be REPLACING the R300 stuff, so the prices on the R300 stuff will not come down, they will simply disappear.
i too would wait before buying a 9600pro
i agree with the 333 fsb and 2x256mb corsair pc2700 LL (low latency) comments.
by the way, when you said ram would cost $70, i assume that means you'd only buy one stick? which wouldn't take advantage of the dual channel feature of the nforce2 chipset.
a new motherboard will run you ~$130, and the ram $159 at newegg
that's a pretty major system overhaul, i dunno if you want to spend all of that money

i personally think replacing the kt266a is a bit of a waste of money. You WILL get a bit more performance, but at a hefty price of a new cpu, ram and mobo.

i would stick with the kt255a and PC2100, get the XP2400+ then maybe upgrade later to a 400fsb barton + mobo when they arive later in the year.

Make the upgrade when the performance gains are more significant.

As for the graphics cards, i would wait (which i am actually).
Currently ive got a craptacular Geforce2pro and i was considering a R9700 nonpro. Now though i think ill wait to see what the R350 does to the product lineup and prices.

Your system seems OK for all the current games out there. Why not hang on to it a while longer? Save up your cash and do a complete upgrade (build a new system) and then sell that one to recuperate some of your cost (easier to sell a complete system).

I don't see any necessicity to upgrade your computer right now..why don't you wait for an Athlon 64? or if you really want to upgrade, I think that 1700+ jump to 2400+ is not a big change..if you wish, I would suggest at least 2800+..

Or he could just do a straight swap for a Tbred B 1700+ and then up the multiplier to give himself a 2400+

The dual channel feature gives you only a slight boost in performance. Everybody seems to assume its massive.

It is noticable if you have got twin sticks of corsair in, but would be even if it didnt have dual channel technology

If you gotta go, go with a smile/y.

even a update to fastest sytemes from today or even next month wont give you a performance that wort it but if you dont upgrade in the next 6 month your platform will be dead.So any upgrade will be for your future need.
