Microphone slots wont recognize my headset (or any mic)

Hey guys and gals, i have a favor to ask of you.
Can you find the solution to my problem? I am trying to put a mic in the mic slots of my computer, but none of the mics are recognized, be it a headset or webcam with built-in microphone.

Ill give you my specs first:
-msi n430gt-md1gd3/oc/lp graphics card
-Antec 500 watt power Supply
-Steel Antec case, black finish, 1 150mm fan, 1 75mm fan
-Asus P5K Green motherboard
-Processor Intel Core2 Quad CPU @ 2.40GHz, 2394 Mhz
-4x1gb supertalent ram
-500gb hdd
-windows 7 home premium 64bit

All the cords are plugged in nice and tight, the mics work on other computers as well. When inserted, the computer does not give a single hint towards the mic, and doesn't recognize it at all, like it doesn't even exist. Do you think i need new audio drivers? If so can you give me a link to it?

All in all, i need some help, and i'm coming to you in my time of need, don't fail me now!

Is this a home built rig? If so, are you sure you have the bios setting correct for the audio headers? (ac97 vs hd audio)?

Its using HD audio device, sorry I don't really know how to check the bios.
