Gateway Lt 4004u- disable touch pad with usb mouse?

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or Windows 7 issue. Is it possible to disable the touchpad and click bar on a Gateway LT4004u by adding a USB mouse? An elderly user keeps resting her hand on the click bar and is having trouble using the touchpad to move the cursor. Thanks.

you should be able to in the touchpad settings or sometimes the bios depending on system or you could go into device manager and disable the touchpad.
