Hi :) I'm currently running an 1800+ tbredA overclocked to a 2000+ on an asus a7n8x deluxe board. I have an antec case with two 120 MM fans in it, the front one blowing in, the back one blowing out. **Is this the proper way to have them??** I'm running a ti4200 video card, 2 80 JB WD hard drives, cd-rw, cd-rom, and an antec true430W power supply. I'm using some cheap comp usa HSF which worked fine in the winter, but i live in el paso tx and right now the temps are starting to rise. My idle temp is about 50C, and under load gets up to about 60C. When we start to have our 100F days in the summer, this isn't going to cut it. I have my computer in my room, i sleep with it on, so i'm looking for a quality HSF that's fairly quiet. I don't plan on overclocking anymore, but i need something quiet so that i can sleep at night and finally close my case. I know about the 7+ , but i tried that once and the speed settings didn't work at all, it was just full speed all the time and that was WAAAAAAAAAY too loud for me. Any other suggestions? I was thinking about the Vantec Aeroflow, any comments? Thanks in advance.

and finally close my case.
I'd look at your case cooling. If you have the cover off the case the fans case fans can't do their job. You need a positive air flow through the case & you can't get it with the cover off. How many case fans do you have running & where are they at? You need at least 2 of them, 1 in the front & 1 in the rear. The case cover allows the air to be directed through the case & not out the cover.

If it ain't broke, take it apart & see why not!

I would bet he has a 120MM in the front, blowing in, and a 120MM in the back, blowing out.

My suggestion:

I also have cheap CompUSA HSF, except I 86'ed the fan (60MM). I got one of those 60MM to 80MM fan shrouds, and plugged in an ANTEC 80MM fan. My temps dropped 5C, and it is WAY quieter.

Which CompUSA HSF is it? The brass standard looking one?

Also, check to make sure all your cables and such are not blocking airflow through the case, as this can have an impact on cooling.

Water cooling is for the weak. Get liquid nitrogen.

I have this case: <A HREF="http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=93700" target="_new">http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=93700</A> . It has 2 120MM fans inside of it, the front one blowing in, the back one blowing out. There aren't any cables in the way, everything is tied up really nice. If i put the side panel back on the case, my cpu overheats. I have this heatsink/fan on it: <A HREF="http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50254543&pfp=SEARCH" target="_new">http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50254543&pfp=SEARCH</A> .It's a really cheap item, thats why im thinking of getting the vantec aeroflow.

I read the link you put in your post on the case your using. Your heat issue seems funny to me. I'm running this <A HREF="http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=91082" target="_new">case</A>. Notice the fan in the side of the case door. W/O that my TI6400 would block all the air flow under the card. The 4600 is so big it's like a shelf & holds heat in, thus heating up the CPU. I'm also running a 2400 with stock HSF & my temps with this set up are 38c & 42c under load. Antec sells the the optional side door but I couldn't find one listed for your case on your link. It may be available & might be the ticket for you. I also live in high heat & humidity in the summer, Michigan.

If it ain't broke, take it apart & see why not!

The aeroflow is good but not GREAT - I've got one on my Athlon 1600 Palamino. Now, I know that you've got a lower wattage output, but nonetheless, you want cool and quiet I wouldn't go with the aeroflow - I can only get it quiet through my rheobus running at 7V. For a couple of bucks more, grab an MCX462 with a panaflo fan or a papst on it, or even an SLK-700 or 800... you can even grab an Alpha PAL8045 for cheap enough. And its already getting that warm down there !? Urgh you're so lucky, its getting warmer here too (Montreal, Quebec) - like -16*C <i>warmer</i> which is what, like 8*F (i think)... hehehehehehe I wouldn't complain! Well, yeah I would, thats why I'm starting watercooling, b/c it can get that hot in here too during the summer, but our summer only starts in mid-june !

<b>people are only idiots when they don't realize - when they do it just gets funnier, like a dog chasing its own tail, or like george bush's public address(es)</b>

<A HREF="http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=80637#" target="_new">http://www.antec-inc.com/pro_details_enclosure.php?ProdID=80637#</A>This is the ANTEC case I have, with all 4 80MM fans blowing slow via the FANS ONLY 5v plug.

I have the same HS you do, but like I said, I put an 80MM fan on it.

I'm running an XP-1800 (t-bre b)@ 1.79 GHz and my temps are the same at my DURON 1300 @ 1417 was.

Make sure you HSF is installed properly, and seated well. What RPM are your 120MM going? (in relation as in FUll Speed, Half Speed or Slow Speed)

One of my 80MM fans is blowing across my HD's because the WD 40@7200 runs hot.

How is your video card cooling? Mine is directly below the CPU, which adds some heat to the mix, but not enough to add more than 1 or 2F.

If your reluctant to setup your water cooling, then why do you have it?

zalman make some good hsf.. i use their CNPS6000-Cu cooler. it is basically a fairly large copper fan shaped heatsink with a 92mm fan which you attach to the pci brackets. i run a xp 2400 @ 166*13 and my temps stay within 3 degrees of ambient even at full load. and because its a large fan its very quiet. comes with a speed controller too.
heres the link http://www.zalman.co.kr/usa/product/cnps6000cu.htm

I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by rcj187 on 03/14/03 12:21 PM.</EM></FONT></P>

Yes, an adaptor. I got one at CompUSA for 4.99, it dropped my temps about 3 to 4C and is A LOT quieter.

I would definently recommend it, and it easily installes.
